Hi!
Yes - while electronic locks can give some very real security advantages like the ability to add/remove individual authorizations, they should always be combined with mechanical locking if you don't have other security layers to compensate for their failures.

Even the ones that aren't total and utter crap are a lot harder to reason about and tend to fail a lot more dramatically once they do...

Welcome.

Lots to learn and help here.

Agree about electronic locks except maybe the Kaba X-10 :D

Side channel attacks would be a worry even for that one. While for obvious reasons there aren't any power lines to sniff, you still run a real risk of RF emissions across the band. What's worrying is that you have no way of checking that without a lot of work using specialized gear and knowledge. And of course that the manufacturer needs to figure out all sources of leaks and eliminate them - an attacker only has to find one... Look at the attack against Simons Voss locks (admittedly a power line side channel attack but still) - not even a clear way to fix it in existing hardware.

Probably more worrying - how do you know it wasn't backdoored, either in transit or at the factory? Kinda hard to backdoor a mechanical combination lock without it being really obvious, and any subtle defects introduced to leak state information are still unlikely to lead to catastrophic failure.

Re: hi from sweden

i did take better look at kaba mas 50/500 series and i dident like what i did se

i have been working whit and build my own thing fore the last 30 years an what i do realy like now is KISS
keep it simple stupid

but there are mych that can fail fore on or another reason in them, and i dident se the things i wantet in the lines between the inside and outside parts
emc,emp,nemp protection

the best way of making it safe fore programming is open sorce, but i dont know if it ever would go there

so i did switch to key and kombination, and looking fore a funktional way to protect mecanical combination from outside manipulation, spinning or even low energy level bruteforcing for several days

it will take a few weeks before i get som china standardparts
and i did buy a S&G 6741 fore testing it and learning how to spin them
