Yale Y210/51 padlock gutted

This is the lock I got along with the kryptonite. First of all I want to direct you to micks vid where he picked and gutted it... skip to 6:20 to see what's inside his:

My findings were a bit different! Here is the lock:

And the core removed:

Image

The core has 6 pin chambers so you can add an extra pin if you like... the key profile is identical to that of the X6 cylinder so you could pin this up to work with your front door key if you liked. Pretty nifty!

It's worth mentioning that I tried an X5 key aswell, but it didn't fit - it's actually a slightly different shape and also a bit larger, but at a glance they look identical so mixing them up is pretty easy. Anyway... you'll notice that the springs alternate in height, so we have ourselves some balanced drivers in here.

And here they are (not in order):

Image

And the key pins:

Image

You'll notice there is a slight inwards taper at the top of each pin... this makes oversetting pins very easy to do. Here's a macro shot:

Image

At first I was going by micks findings and avoiding false sets like the plague because I assumed it was the chamfer and "false set" translated to "overset"... nomatter how careful I was, I couldn't get it open. Now I know why! I put it back together and got straight back to picking it, but strangely I'm still not having much luck.

I'm putting that down to lack of concentration though. I'm gonna have to pay a lot more attention if I want to crack this thing... so when I sit down with it again, if something clicks out of false set I need to make a note of which pin it is and take care not to push on it any more, cos at the moment I'm not really paying attention to that stuff. I never really had to before, since with normal key pins it doesn't matter if you apply a bit of pressure on them when they're set.

This will be a good learning experience for when it comes to serrated key pins like the ones in that bastard kryptonite. I'll be posting again when I get this sucker open. Certain levels of excitement are to be expected. 8-)

The bitting doesn't look that bad, I have never picked anything with balanced drivers though! Those Yales are a high class fricken lock!

UPDATE!

Image

Now, here's what I learned... those key pins don't actually do anything! At least I don't think so. I picked it a second time just to make sure I didn't fluke it, and sure enough the exact same thing happened again. It was much easier that time, so I'm confident I can get the pick time down enough to get the full pick on camera. Really wish I had better memory on that thing now, it's a prime candidate for a picking & gutting vid. I'm gonna get myself a proper memory card for it ASAP.

Anyway, it seems that I was only having trouble because the front pin needs to be pushed so far down, and it also happens to be the last pin to set. I got 4 pins set with my standard technique and it went into HUGE false set, but I couldn't find which pin it was... so I switched to a medium hook to get a better feeling of what was going on in there and discovered it was the front pin.

For some reason the half diamond didn't wanna shift it, but that little hook did the trick rightly. I felt a strong click and the plug just went. A beautiful, familiar feeling which always makes my heart beat faster. I'll be posting a vid when I get the picking time down.

Thanks J!

Haha yeah, it still took a while to get it cracked the first time... same with any lock I get really, doesn't take long to get it down to a fine art once I've picked it a couple of times though.

And yeah, it's a real nice lock. Brushed steel finish makes it look badass, and that little button logo is cool as hell. It looks all suave and professional. And is that a BORON SHACKLE?! You know you want it. The ladies love that boron shackle, understandably my gf won't let me wear it cos I'd be covered in pure moist the second I stepped out the door with that thing. Good god it's a sexy lock.

I should get a sales position with yale. Introducing yale's new line of kitemarked aphrodisiac cylinders. 8-)

Ok everybody, until hallis calms down a little I suggest you lock up your, erm... locks. :|

I had a 6-pin ERA which was giving me trouble aswell and since I got the yale open I figured I'd take another stab at it... and guess what? Open! I'm on a roll here, I need some springs so I can get that kryptonite back together and hand it some justice. Where can I get a bunch of springs without having to buy a huge f*ck-off pinning kit? 8-)

I know what you mean by the spool not wanting to budge, I bellied out my good HPC hook the other day on that fricken Brinx diskus, now I need to buy a couple replacements. Oh well, $3.75 apiece for my favorite .022 spring steels ain't that bad!!

I'm not too bothered about the goso picks. They're pretty strong but if they do get messed up they're cheap as chips anyway.

I picked and gutted it on video (albeit not in one continuous shot since my record time is limited to 1:27). It'll appear in my video thread very shortly.

Great job on picking that lock mate. When i saw Frantics videos on these locks they always had spools in them, so when i tried to pick mine i was expecting spools (of course) but when i opened it the cupboard was bare, just regular pins.

I'm getting this one off the shelf again now, see if i can't cut that nearly 8 minute video down to something more reasonable. And without all the cramping and tendon snapping that went along with it.
