tutorial request: defeating the VATS system

sooo... I wanna put a fichet in my firebird... how would I go about beating the vats system so I can replace the ignition with the new core...

I know I can solder in the resistor but where exactly would I solder it... assuming I can figure out which one to solder in there...

Re: tutorial request: defeating the VATS system

Hi LSA,

Per our chat conversation:

Your ignition has 2 wires coming off it to a connector. you have to cut both wires off the ignition, and solder the resistor to the two loose wires, leave plug plugged into car

Cut the two white wires so they dont go into the ignition anymore: http://www.vatskey.com/vats/700754.jpg

To figure out which resistor value to buy, use volt ohm meter on your current key and touch the silver contacts that are in the black square on the blade from both sides. make sure to buy a high tolerance resistor.

Here's a nice table the proper Digikey resistors to buy http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o145 ... Table2.jpg

Enjoy ,

Re: tutorial request: defeating the VATS system

The switch you put into the vats wire may not work
The switch will act like a resistor when it is turned on
If the value is changed just a little it will not work and it don't take much
I will post a pic of the plug and resistor that you will need tomorrow
This is where I get my resistors from

The repo company's I do keys for have me install them under the dash every-time I do a vats

yeah I expect to have to compensate for the switch... but Id like to have it as an extra precaution anyway...

Re: tutorial request: defeating the VATS system

Here is a pic for you
The wire plugs in under the dash
The wire will come out of the bottom of the column
If you tilt the column up you can make the wire longer bye cutting the wire from looking where the column tilts up from the bottom in the gap
