Peterson D7B-PS pick set

Recently purchased a new offering from Peterson Internatioal. The B series picks include a peterson gem, ripple(city rake) and hooked half diamond. In my experience, these work as well as any HPC I've used and have excellent feedback. I also got the PPB-LT and found it to be an excellent addition. This set came with the 2 3/8" wide snap over case. IMHO well worth the $28.00USD cost. Shipping was another $7.95USD.

Thanks for the post, I was actually considering one of those sets a little while ago. I still am considering the peterson pry bars. They look like they would be a nice change from the tension tools that I make myself. They have me curious in any case. I may have to look into picking one of these up.

i use my peterson pry bars all the time (especially on american padlocks )
it is a different feel at first but you quickly get used to em

Peterson products are generally quite good. Albiet some of the sets in the Government Steel range can be a bit dear.

The set you reviewed seem very attractive given the price and reputaion for quality.

Footnote to my original post: Lost the small tension wrench in the couch... frantically recovered it, then broke the short leg of the wrench on a discus padlock. Gov't steel is strong and I've been popping locks since 1974, so I suspect I surpassed the metal threshold. Oh,well.

I retract my praise for Peterson entry pickset D7B-PS. I humbly return to HPC, a poorer but wiser retired locksmith. The durability was a major disappointment. Comparing carbon spring steel, HPC is well suited to use in the real world. IMHO.

i find them very akward.
am i right in guessing they were not intended for in-hand picking?
with so many top-notch pickers using these with such great success,
i want to make sure to learn the techniques involved .

HPC seem pretty hard to beat.

Yeah, i find that the pry bars are difficult to use in-hand such as with padlocks and what not because there is no offset. i much prefer a TOK tension wrench that has an offset like the design that you came up with. I do prefer to use the pry bars on cylinders that i have in a vise or in an actual door.

I have the best luck with the prybar picking in hand CCW using my thumb. I like the Peterson Spring steel picks, but I don't use them as primaries... that might have something to do with it. Can't beat those guberment steel slender gems though.

I've never tried the Peterson Spring Steel picks, I have some Govt. Steel regulars, and I have a Govt Steel Slender Gem as well, definitely a nice pick. Tooly do you use HPC's as your primary picks?

^No, I have a backup set of stainless and different thickness spring steel HPC's with a Peterson plastic handled spring steel pick or two. My primary stuff is all crap I made, except for a slender gem I pinned with kydex scales. They don't sell the slender tools in plastic, and I'm not a big fan of the dip.
