No, he uses actual 7 pin factory Schlage mortise cylinders.

I have one just like this, I got if from jeffmoss. The only difference is its a 6 pin not a 7. great learning lock. I got it as an extra lock with a best padlock. (thanks jeff).

Clarification, if this were " actual Schlage " it would be branded. This is a Schlage knock-off, even the keys are generic. I have never seen a 7 pin though, very interesting. I wonder where one would get 7 pin key blanks?

I have an Emtek lock sent to me from bosnianbill, who got it from Alex Blate. It is a 7 pin mortise cylinder, with a 5 pin key modified for 7 pins.
The lock itself might have been drilled out to 7 pins.

It is a good quality USA made mortise cyld as are all the parts including the hex wrench, stainless steel set screws, and keys. It is factory drilled 7 pin with very good tolerances. Schlage C Keyway which is used in both residential and commercial settings. Very good practice lock and being a 7 pin makes it an outstanding training aid.

Why does the key have 6 cuts?

It is 6 pin keys because it is keyed to only 6 pin as 7 pin keys are not available, at least at a reasonable cost.
I used to make this in only in 6 pin capacity cyld but decided to offer something unique.
I could have keyed it to only 5 pin but I have not cut corners on anything in this kit.
I used the best quality possible on all parts and still keep the price at a good value.

OK, that makes sense. Are the 7-pin keys too pricey or are they restricted to a required contract or something?

Think I have a couple Schlage 7 pin keys. They are control keys for Schlage LFIC locks. I'll check tonight or tomorrow and get back. If they are the 7 pin keys, I'll post a picture. Have not played with those LFICs in a while, so my memory may be wrong.

Yes they would have to be actual schlage control key blanks as gordon is talking about to be 7 pin for removable core cylds and come with the tip cut already on them. I have not see after market blanks available. I have a few original but are pricey indeed.
