Pickmasters gage -- what is it for??

So I recently obtained the following gage. Made by Pickmasters. It's really cool and the box it comes in is almost as cool as the device itself. Does anyone have any clue what it's for? It seems to measure depth from what I can tell, but I don't see for what it'd be useful. The end that presses inward (on the left side) has a small divot. The right side unscrews and the part that remains moves outward when you push the left side. It tracks from .001 inches to .300 inches.

I used to use something similar to this to check if crank shafts or machine chucks were running true. the micrometer would be held solid in a clamp touching the side of the chuck/collit which would them be spun slowly, by watching the dial you could tell if it needed straighting up.

I'm guessing your tool is designed for measuring parts of keys or locks, but i really dont know which or how. Can anyone else shed some light of what this is used to measure?

I thought you knew...It's for mic-ing out your tubular pick (or key); to aid in generating keys.

Could it be for measuring the inside diameter of a plug or lock core :???:
