Fake Rake

Trying my hand at pick making.
Going for a Bogota like Raimundos.
Still working on it, first 2 failed.
The third one I'm having fun with already, not even finished but had to try it.
Picked a 6 pin kwikset Titan with a hi-low bitting.
Picked a Schlage SecureKey to the Reset position. That's a first. Never been able to do anything with it before.
Had to find the old blue reset keys to fix.
Can't wait to sand and polish, add a handle.

Re: Fake Rake

Heya jharveee,

Great work!

I have some street sweeper bristles on order from which I plan to do the same.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Cheers,
Sean

Re: Fake Rake

Nice one.

Here's one that I made a while ago when I was experimenting with making them.

Made from a wiper insert and is very strong.

I was going to clean up the peaks but it works so well that I left it alone.

I have tried many different metals and they have nearly all broken at some stage, even commercial ones - so don't use it in a lock in use.

The strongest one that I have made so far is this one. As you can see it is a bit meatier than most but is a killer on LockWoods etc.

Again, good job, they are amazing picks.

Yep, saw yours the other day.(Neilau)
The double ender. Very cool.
Made me want to get off my rear end and give it another try.
Thanks :hbg:

That is the design I use on my bogota copies. Its strength comes from not undercutting the peaks too much. Rai's design is excellent of course, but I do feel that unless the material is very strong, taking too much material off the bottom weakens the design.

Love your handles Escher7.
Mine is going to be a block of wood glued onto it.
Maybe shape it a bit, least round off the corners.

Outstanding, work, escher. As expected, you have done a fantastic job.

I have been snapping a few photos of the pick I am currently working on and may put together a post on how I make the handles etc. You will find it easier to have a few tools like a small bandsaw, drill press, bench grinder, and some kind of belt sander (I use a hand belt sander upside down in a Workmate), but it is possible to get good results using files and a whole lot of sandpaper.
