How Do I Remove This Snap Ring?

I want to remove this broken off cam (connecting bar?) so I can replace it and use the Yale cylinder to replace the crap on my front door. I can, of course pry the ring off, but I assume there is an intelligent way to remove it. Help??

Lock cylinder has to be turn 180% first back to locked position. Notice large deep milled slot in cyld housing on right side of cyld. That is for tailpiece and with retainer clip to slide out of. Put cyld back in vise use a small flat screwdriver on tab where you see arrow pointing, press it upward and towards that deep slot. It is stiff spring metal so I use small screw driver a small hammer with light tapping to get it started, Tailpiece and retainer slide off to the left together.

Unofficially, this is called the E clip, which is a good name for it. They're soft, not spring steel. There are tools made to remove and replace them, but you could do it with a small screwdriver and pliers. Here's a link to a page from a UK supplier where they are called circlip pliers and circlip removal tool:

Re: How Do I Remove This Snap Ring?

That is NOT and E Clip.
Better look closer it isn't even close to an E Clip.
And I can assure you it is a strong metal retainer.
It slides sideways out of that slot not upwards like a E Clip.

The type you are talking about are soft and some have a long tang in the middle that goes through a hole in the tailpiece.

This is what an E Clip (minus the long center tang) looks like that is not what is on this cyld.

This below is what is on that cyld unless I have gone completely blind.

No apology needed Deadlock, it is hard to see what is really going on with it in that picture.
I only know what it is because that is an OLD yale cyld and I am OLD.

The clip I am showing is from Medeco knob cyld but still looks the same as one on that yale.
Very strong metal that is why I use a small hammer and screw driver to get it to start to slide.

Ha, I actually bought a lot with a bunch of old yales. Those clips can be a pain to get out.... especially of something slips

So that's what it looks like when you don't destroy it and the lock while re-keying.
Had the misfortune of running into one of them clips.
Ended up replacing the lock.
Live and learn.
Seems the older the lock the more difficult to work on.
True, they are better made.......that's why there old.

It requires at least 10 minutes of swearing. Bonus points if you draw blood.

Re: How Do I Remove This Snap Ring?

Thanks guys. I will try Wiz's technique. I still find it odd that Yale would put this out without a proper tool to remove the ring.
