Home Made Foil Impressioning...

So i took some feelr gauge and made me a foil impressioning kit for kwikset...
its fun.

start with some feeler gauge... cut out all the space where a pin could go (plus a lil extra for the foil)

(This is not my best work with a dremmil, ive been sick all day cut me some slack)

wrap it in aluminum foil... im told foil tape works too but this is plane old aluminum foil...

now insert it into the lock and begin wiggling it up and down while u use a regular tension wrench to apply light tension to the plug...

eventually your lock will open:

if you manage to get the foil out undamaged (i did not) you can decode a key:

Great work LSA!

This is what I did too. My first couple of attempts were thwarted by having to get the arms thin enough to fit between the pins. I also struggled with the spacing and keeping them consistent. Did you not find this a problem?

I use a 'lifter' to push the pins up when I'm done so I can get the tool out ok.

just an idea ,i wonder if youd get the same result from a 999 key shaved down to accept the foil.it would be stronger, but have less movment, anyway great work lsa.

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

If you can get the tool thin enough then you could get it out undamaged by using another piece of metal to force all of the pins up.
Howdy!

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

I made a shim tool to raise the pins out of my impressioning comb... but it cuts up ur foil on insertion so decoding is hard

I do have a real keyblank made to do the same thing, it works aswell but you get more jiggling out of the feeler gauge tool so its faster.

I did not have much issue with spacing and cutting cause I had an empty plug to test my spacing (every step of the way) and the longest depth pin to test depth and width (every step of the way)

I did mess up one attempt but the one shown was my second attempt at making the tool.

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

this time I used a real key blank...
it works,

I wanted steel blanks, I bent oneof my prongs during the removal process, somehow... check around 4:45 you can see it

Very nice. I'll have to give it a go.

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

Did you try the foil tape? I'm curious to see if that would solve the removal issue, in theory it makes sense with less edges to catch and seems to be more resilient than just foil.

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

Cool stuff. I've always wanted to try to do some impressioning but just never given it the time of day. Looks like it can be a pain in the ass, that's for sure. :P

Re: Home Made Foil Impressioning...

what if I bought thicker foil...

there are 2 things that could happen... 1 the foil wont shred... 2 the foil will take up too much space and wont have enough room to depress with the pin...

i suppose the 3rd option is it wont help or hurt and nothing will change...

the possibilities are endless... make ur own key and try for yourselves ;)
