Hey good to see your back home for a stint... too bad you're getting THAT weather though. Holy crap man! -17F with a windchill of -45F tonight? Crazy stuff there. Better get you some good dogs before you go back to where hot dog has a whole different meaning

Nice on the picks you just banged out too.

I do have a question for you though... on the one a while back that had the silver handle. Did you use livers of sulfur to get that patination or something else?

Just thinking back to my days of reconnecting my timing chain on a motorbike where I had to use a ball pein hammer to spread the rivet....never did trust my own work, I always questioned if I had done it properly when doing 100mph + going down the motorway.

Pick tang and pins are held in with epoxy. The pins are a tight fit, so even without the epoxy they wouldn't come out easily. I can't use a hammer to make a rivet, it's too likely to split the wood.

I do to a certain extent. I'm still learning. I'm about intermediate - upper intermediate level.

Weather here feels so warm after being in Chicago. It's like 30s - 40s here.

Real hot dogs and real burgers were what I was really looking forward to eating. Do you know Portillo's? I went there about 4 times while I was back. I was also looking forward to Thai food that wasn't Koreanized, Mexican food, and being able to easily find clothes in my size.

Yes, I used liver of sulfur on the silver handle pick.

All the pics are so nice! I got really inspired and want to start making pics. But mine would look like a joke compared to these... so maybe not

And I think I might get evicted if I start cutting in metal in my living room :/

Well if you want to make picks try and see how they turn out. You have to start somewhere. I'd been a professional jeweler and working in metal for about 12 years before I started making picks, so I came into this with a lot of prior experience.

I can't answer for ratyoke but there are plenty of pick making tutorials on the web if you do some googling. All you really need is some metal, a set of cheap files, some sandpaper and, of course, a little patience :razz:

About 20usd and you're well on your way

Add a grinding wheel and a dremel to that list and you could bang out some picks in 15 minutes. Not like these of course but they'd still do the trick.

Also, thanks for the inspiration ratyoke, think I'm going to dust off the ole' tools and get to work on some new toys myself :smile:

I did do one a long time ago, but focus was more on the handles than the pick blades. viewtopic.php?f=39&t=627&p=4871#p4871

I also did an anodizing tutorial on LP101.
