Solomons homebrew cack

Thought I'd share some of my homebrew stuff, old and new. Any time I make something new I'll add it to this post.

These are the first picks I ever made:

Image

I used wooden spoon handles with a notch cut out, a bit at the end of the wiper insert is bent and inserted into that hole then wrapped nice and tight with string. They're terrible.

Speaking of terrible, behold the worlds most god-awful disc detainer pick:

Image

The pick part is a bobby pin, the tensioner is a filed down part from an old aerial with a handle from a hobby knife for grip. The handle which grips the pick is from a plug.

This is another disc detainer pick, not strictly homebrew but I did modify it quite heavily to get it to this state:

Image

These next tools are for simple padlocks. The one with the black handle (from an automatic centre punch) is for bypassing padlocks where the locking dog can be retracted through the keyway. The blue handled one (needle file grip) is for warded padlocks. I actually gave these away a while ago and planned to make myself more, but never got around to it.

Image

On the subject of bypass, this is a thumbturn tool I made recently:

Image

It doesn't work on the ones I have as they don't have notched cams, so I plan to get some cheaper thumbturns in future to test it on and make some different shaped wires aswell.

Here is an assload of tension wrenches I made before:

Image

I was bored that day...

Also made a feather touch wrench from 19swg wire. It's spring steel and gives very good feedback, although I still prefer the normal type. I didn't make it like the commercially available ones, this is just a straight wire with a loop at one end:

Image

Now for more picks... don't wanna bulk out the thread too much, so here are the latest ones:

Image
Image

They're both made from wiper inserts, hand filed and sanded. The first one is a short hook and has 4 layers of heat shrink for the handle.

I went a step further with the medium hook and added another length of insert to each side before adding heatshrink. The handle is sort of squared and very comfy to hold, feedback is excellent too. Much better than the wooden spoon picks

Thanks for reading. Will be adding more crap as I make it

NEW!! Dental picks:

Image

This is a pocket set with 3 picks made from spring steel wire (19swg). There is a medium hook, offset and rake... everything sits inside the handle nice and tight until needed. I plan on adding some wires suitable for dimple locks aswell.

New... dimple pick:

Image

Fiddly to use but it works ok.

And a mini disc detainer pick for the 30mm padlocks with smaller keyways:

Image

First batch of hacksaw blade picks, even made a tensioner with one... proper old school stuff!!

Image

I abandoned the dental pick idea, as seen above... it does work but this new one is much nicer. Retractable pocket pick with short hook, city rake and 2 tension wrenches:

Image

My first lever wires for non-curtain mortice:

Image

New hook with leather wrapped handle... I like this one a lot. This was supposed to be a short hook but it actually turned out more like a peterson gem.

Thanks kokomo, I picked a lock with it on cam before but it was a cheapy one and all but 3 discs were drivers lol... to pick anything with more than 3 cuts takes a while cos the feedback is rubbish, but it does the job!

Many thanks J, I really took my time on that one to make it as neat as possible, guess it paid off! I wanted to replicate a hook from the shalon set which I really like and use a lot. My apologies to Peterson... :???:

Working on a full homebrew set now... one at a time though, takes the guts of a bloody hour just to make one!! I shudder to think how long ratyoke spends on his

Great looking tools Solomon. I just wish I was as talented.

What did you make the bypass tools out of? I tried to make one but could not get it strong enough that it would not bend.

Thanks!
Ed

Excellent. I like the look of the hook with the black (heat shrink) handle, it has an elegant simplicity about it. A set of those would look cool.

I wouldn't call myself talented lol... the picks I make aren't amazing, they're smooth and work very well for me, but I woudn't look at my own work and think "wow I could never do that". You just have to grab some tools and see what happens. You'd be surprised what you can make with some cheap files, and the time really flies.

A dremel makes life much easier, but I only got that because I wanted to start using hacksaw blades; if you're working with wiper inserts it isn't necessary. The ones with heat shrink handles were made with a bench vice, round and flat files, a set of mole grips and some sandpaper. Put on some good music, sit down and get to work. There is something very relaxing about it, even if it looks like shit in the end you can still open locks with it - and you can't beat that with a big stick :D

The bypass tools are just piano wire or wiper insert. I think the guages are mentioned up there, if not... I can't remember

As for the handles, they're either needle file grips, the housing from an automatic centre punch, or pin vice.

Thanks piotr. I like them a lot but I'll be working on the hacksaw blade set before I start faffing around with wiper inserts again. Once I stock up on more inserts I'll definitely make some more of those though :D

Wiz and elbow... stop talking about my cack :hbg:
