Kokomolock was kind enough to send me some closeup pics of a set of IC core tools over graph paper with micrometer measurements too. He asked me to post them in the section I deemed most appropriate.

Here are the pics:

Ok, this is really kokomo's post, I just added it on his behalf. A lot of people ask about these in the chat, so I'm making this a sticky.

I was skeptical of these tension tools for the longest time and could not get myself to spend 15 each for them from peterson. I am glad I made these, SPPing an ICore to control has never been easier. I picked my first two ICores I picked up from my collection both 7 pins one best the other an arrow core and pick the arrow in about 30 sec and the best in about 45 sec. to control first try. I usually hit operating a time or two prior to the control. Amazing design. wont pick another with out it.

I learn something new every day.
The place where I work has just replace all the door hardware to Best IC core hardware complements of myself. just a little over 2000 locks in total.
but I always wondered if there would be a way to have a method to pick either operating or control and now I know. Thanks!

Gerry Finch tools save the day again

Thanks to everyone for the photos and postings. Is a wiper blade link tall enough to make these? and what is the depth of the cuts?? Maybe 1/32nd inch?

Thanks again,

Tom

PS Sorry if I re-opened an old post... Just good stuff!

Help me out guys. I am not familiar with this tool but I think I understand. Normal tension tool puts pressure on the inner core, so picking will get you an opening result. This tool, because of the teeth, puts turning pressure on the "second" core resulting in picking to the control level. Correct?

Yep. It puts tension on the control sleeve so the binding that occurs in the pinstacks is on the control sleeve. These tools aren't necessary to pick to control. You can still get at the control shearline by using normal top or bottom keyway tension although it is generally more difficult.

Thanks Xeo. I do have a few Best cylinders and to pick them open I have found that very light pressure keeps the pins setting where you want them. It took a little while, but once you get the hang of Best they are not that hard. Now I can try the control technique.
For anyone else having trouble visualizing the Best cylinder:

Not hard... I should send you some of mine. ;]

Some of them can be rage inducingly difficult.

Xeo:

I believe you, I do have one Best with an ugly keyway and some screwy pins that fights pretty hard. Of course all locks have their tough and easy variations. My hate lock right now is a Sargent 6 pin with the last 4 pins at 9-1-9-1 (yes, I have the key and still can't pick it), plus some spool or serrated pins. Time spent probably 10 hours. Tried CW and CCW, light and heavy tension, Bogota style rakes etc. No luck so far. If I can't get it soon I will tear it down to see what evil lurks inside.
