So I decided to make a bump hammer instead of using my screwdriver, and I thought I would show how I made it.

1: Get a cheap cutting board. This one was $2.50.


2:measure out your handle.


3: Cut out the handle. This would be much easier with a table saw or a band saw, or any type of electric saw for that matter.


4:now cut out several rectangles for the hitting face.


5:Glue them together. Super glue wont stick to some plastics so experiment if it doesn't stick.


6:Glue them to your handle and shape the whole thing up.


now bump away.

nice. i used a hack saw blade and a rubber stopper from home depot cost about the same. works great.

Now I'm just wondering out loud here... but what about a small deadblow hammer?

Im new to bumping here. can you explain what a deadblow hammer is.

Well, a deadblow hammer doesn't neccessarily have anything to do with picking locks or bumping locks. It's just a type of hammer, often filled with shot that when you strike something it doesn't bounce back, hence deadblow.

I got one of those Brockage bump hammers in a trade along time ago, it works good, I have never had to use anything else so I assume it's ok!

Seriously guys, anyone with lock bumping experience, what do you think about using a deadblow hammer? Or do you really need the rebound of the hammer?

i'm not an expert by any means..but i have quite a few bump keys and have used them on a lot of locks. Kwikset, Schlage, etc. And American Padlocks are surprisingly easy to bump..espceially 5200's. I've always had the Brockhage bump hammer that has some bounce in it when you make contact. but i've used things like screwdrivers, the handle of the metal HPC tubular pick Model-B, and the bodys of other padlocks as well. I don't think that the rebound is completely necessary. I think it is going to vary depending on the lock you are trying to bump and the tolerances etc within that lock. I don't see why using a deadblow hammer wouldn't work as well as other devices people use. I think it's mostly the lock that makes the difference...just my $0.02...

I'm by no means an expert either, but I believe a deadblow hammer wouldn't work as well (not saying it won't work). When the "rebound" happens, all the energy is transferred to the key and pins (like those metal clicking balls suspended from strings you see on people's desks). A deadblow hammer would be more of a "pushing" motion (exaggerated) if you hit it wrong. Besides I think even a small deadblow hammer would be using excessive force, as not much is needed.

But then again, it's 2am, and I could be totally wrong =)

speaking of which, y'all have a preference on a square or round bumping head? Or it doesn't matter as long as you don't hit your own fingers...lol
