I looking for a small vice for locks, I found this one http://www.hobbytools.com.au/prod232.htm its in Australia so its not going to cost a fortune.Would this suit what Im after ? Any other preferences?

My advice would be buy yourself a decent 4 inch DAWN vice with moving base,

and learn to use it properly.

A vice is just like any other tool in a workshop, you have to learn how to use it, to use it effectively.

Pissly little fiddly vices are useless for anything that actually requires vicing. If you can hold it in a twisty vice, you can hold it in your hand.

A Dawn would be nice but I was looking at some thing I could quickly attach to the computer desk or similar and static pick.I dont think the wife would find a 4 " vice in the bed room amusing.

here are my vises.
the little clampy one has been with me for 20 years,and i still use it almost everyday.
it is an antique,but there are chinese knockoff versions for real cheap.
my life would be very difficult without it.
i use it for keymaking,picks,holding locks while picking,etc,and it's great because you can clamp it anywhere,and its small and light. (its clamped to a little table right beside me =)
the big blue one is too big for most things,but its there when i need a monster grip.
edit: it has a swivel base.
(i still dont have a sturdy place to mount it.)
so,yeah if you are on a buget,and just want to clamp small things,and want the versatility of being able to easily move your work,i recommend one like mine.

I remember my father used to have one of those little ones for his model aeroplane building.
they're a decent little vice.

But as you can see, ray's used the fixed version. I've tried the rotating/flippy things and they're all crap.

fixed or swivel base for my money.

in a lot of cases, vise=wife =/

Just picked this old vise up on evilbay for $11.00 AUD
Description:size: Art Deco vise :18cm high, 19cm wide, 5cm depth opens about 5.5cm.Working condition.
Im wrapped with it ,I like old stuff.What do you think? Next a swivel base for the workshop.

Any advice on a good vacuum based vice?

I don't have a workshop, workspace, etc. to practice. I'm usually futzing around with my practice locks sitting on my living room couch.

I'd like to try more static picking and It would be nice to have a little vice that suctions to my living room table.
