First Showable homebrew picks

Here they are!

stuff 002.jpg

Finally getting the hang of using the grinder. Still need to sand these ones, but other than that they're relatively usable. I also got some better pick material, not the greatest, but better than hacksaw blades.

Looks like you got the shape down pretty good on those picks.

Jingles, those look pretty good. It's a good idea to practice on scrap steel until you get the feeling for how the grinder feels to you when you're working on metal stock.

Just take it slow and get a good feel for it and don't overheat the metal.

Good job.

Re: First Showable homebrew picks

good stuff jingles....it all get easier with practice...try and get some round chainsaw files...
they really do the trick for the inner sides of hooks, the waves in a bogata, and the ripples in rakes...get 3 or 4 sizes if you can....you will be making pro stuff in no time....=)
and remember if your steel is too hot to touch,it's overheated ..quench often.

Re: First Showable homebrew picks

A bastard file is a large flat file. A chainsaw file is a round file. In my experience the teeth on a chainsaw file also cut smoother than a standard el cheapo round file. Walmarts gardening section usually has a set of 2 for 3 bucks.

Good job finally taking the leap into making your own tools. One last tip, get some type of magnification to work with. Eye loops, jewelers headband, standard magnifying glass, etc... It really makes the fine tuning of the shape and polishing so much easier.

Are you going to leave the handle on your knife pick, or use the blade as pick blank stock and cut the pick like awol does for his Sheffield beauties?

Re: First Showable homebrew picks

I have a set of 6 cheapo files, they work good for getting the sharp pieces off the edges, but not for much else. I'll be heading to wally world again... :D . I'll be taking the handle off, it basically falls off when you touch it. Expected, I paid 2 bucks for 10 knives! :D

It is pretty rigid for being $0.20 each. :D My only problem is that my printer is jacked and I can't draw... I'll figure somethin' out. :)
