If you must use electrical tape, use 3M Scotch Super 33

The secret to using Scotch 33 is to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the tape as you apply it. This tape is typically used to weatherproof coaxial cable/antenna connections exposed to the elements. It is a thick tape - with elastic properties that allow it to shrink back after it has been stretched - resulting in a moisture resistant splice.
