Manually pushing across Latch on door

I often see the style of doors that can swing close and lock with the latch part exposed, I've opened these in the past with a butter knife just pushing it across, there are also the ones with the wider solid chunks, are these secure? I've seen them opened with Metal rulers, but I've also seen ones with big covers over them, so are they that easy to bypass?

I think i know the covers, they have them at work. They will open the same way, you just need a longer slim Jim/shim to do it.

Not that I've seen anyway, it's usually why they use the covers...

Is this the one?

Yeah, but I've seen them still opened with a metal ruler, are there tools for such thing or would I be better just making my own?

Mate, you can buy a tool for everything, and if you don't have the cash there's nothing wrong with making your own....not that i can make anything decent myself.

Thanks, I'll use that to try and make up my own, and use that to realize how insecure my house is :-|

If the lock has a deadlocking latch that is properly installed on a well-fitting door you shouldn't be able to slide the latch back.

barn door bolts, the type that have a small bolt sticking out of the larger bolt to lock it by rotation similiar to the way a bolt action rifle would work,
can be manipulated with a piece of hacksaw, the teeth of the hacksaw will rotate the bolt and also grab it for pushing it back out of the way bit by bit.

another one I saw in a hacker book was using a piece of wire or cable and threading it behind the bolt until it comes out the bottom below the guard. then pulling both ends of the wire to retract said bolt. But like was mentioned earlier, if it has a properly functioning deadlatch, this won't work.
