The Official Reg'd Mail Padlock Thread :-)

I am hereby starting the Reg'd Mail Padlock thread. Things I'd like to see are; Ur Mail padlocks, differences in the padlocks, ur key makimg methods and what you paid/sold your lock for. In this thread, we can work together and prove and disprove anything and everything about these padlocks. Are they all really Keyed Alike? We will find out, wont we?
I'd like to start by showing off my newest padlock. This mail padlock is the newest one i have seen. First thing to take note of, is the serial # is laser etched into the padlock. This padlock has plastic over the counter. The counter is at an extremely low number. There is also no star impressed into the shackle. This padlock also does NOT have a brazed brass rivet on the side of the lock. The padlock still has patina, but cant be that old. There is also a brass pin? on the bottom of the padlock. Ive never seen that before.

Here's some bags that the Reg'd Mail locks fit on. They are nearly a perfect fit.

Very interesting... thanks Sour.

Been talking with a friend (Post Master) who lives some distance away, but I see him on a regular basis.
According to him these bags & locks are nearly obsolete nowadays. Instead, they now use what he termed
as 'tamper-proof' bags. They're mainly used to transport mail from one post office to another.

He remembers when they use to wait till they had a good build-up of these locks.... like boxs of em,
before they'd redistribute them. He also said there is indeed only one univeral key for all these locks.
I asked, "absolutely, unequivocally one key for ALL of them?" He said "yes".

Anyway, he said he'd see about getting me an original key and possibly some more locks :)

And, btw, thanks for the time you put in (and congrats) for Moderating! I was very happy when I seen that not too long ago!!!

Re: The Official Reg'd Mail Padlock Thread :-)

IMPORTANT

THESE ARE STILL IN USE!!!

I went to the post office today to ship the first round of my ebay locks. While the postal clerk was taking my boxes, I asked some questions. She commented that one box was heavy and I was saving a lot of money using a flat rate box. I told her it was a 5 pound padlock (Hi Shear). I then remarked that I've seen padlocks on ebay called "Mail padlocks with counters on the side." She looked puzzled and brushed me off. I pulled up an ebay auction with one and showed her a pic. She said, "OH! Those! Yes, we still use those. We use the for the registered mail bags." I told her I thought they were obsolete and replaced. She said, "No. We treid replacing them, but the other padlocks were'nt as secure. The padlocks we use now (ones with counters) are much more secure. No body is getting into them They only use ONE key." I kept my cool and let her think they were secure and that the key they use is still a secret.
Just thought I add this little tid-bit of information :D
