Re: S&G 8088 Cutaway

Nice cutaway.
Guessing by looking at the insides it has a three digit combo.
Looks like 2 of the wheels could be a "Key change" type. Key change index on front.
Is that hole on the front for the Key?
The wheel closest to the dial looks like a "Hole change or Screw type".
Which one is the drive cam or wheel?

Sure would like to have the lock in my hands and take it for a spin.
Finally a lock I could manipulate.

Drive cam is on the back, as is the keyhole. All three wheels are key changeable. The combination is three numbers, then turn to 0. Then pull the shackle.

Gordon

EDIT: Or at least I think the drive cam is in the back.

That is really sweet. Unexpectedly pretty and very familiar.

I had to do this though, just had to being a nerd and all. When I read 8088, I thought of something completely different. Here is the other kind of 8088:

Re: S&G 8088 Cutaway

Good luck with manipulating one of those. Even the manufacturer says if you lose the combo, you have a nice paperweight. The attempts of some who are rather skilled at manipulation have failed as well. It is designed to not give feedback whatsoever, and it's pretty good at that. If you want to really see the guts of one, I HIGHLY recommend scoring one and cutting out the pins that hold the back on and then removing the backplate to get a nice hands-on perspective, but barring that, this page at datagram's site http://www.lockwiki.com/index.php/S%26G_8088 should suffice.

[EDIT] I forgot to mention that I am aware that lockwiki says it is susceptible to both radiological and manipulation attacks, I have yet to hear of someone actually manipulating one aside from just brute forcing the combination.

Although, if you think you can do it, and you somehow manage, I would very much like to hear about that adventure.

@Gordon
No mathco in that there chip. That was back in the days when a mathco was a separate IC.

@Josephus
LOL! I had a difficult time shaking the association between 8088 the CPU and 8088 the lock. After a few years I find that the association stays nicely contextual now. :)

Re: S&G 8088 Cutaway

I was referring to "that" lock.......the one with the nice large windows to the inner workings.
Not that brand or type of lock.
