Removing Anti Drill Pins

So I am looking at making a cutaway and I am brainstorming different ways to remove antidrill pins without sacrificing a bits. Anyone have any good ideas/ what they have done?

In some locks if you disassemble the cylinder you can pull them out. Others require you grind some of the lock around the insert before you can grab it and pull it out.
I'm not a cut away expert so this info is limited to my lock disassembling experience.

Have you tried just to bang it out? I know sometimes they fall out by on their own and other times a few stamps will free it out enough to grab.

I would probably carefully dremel it along the same direction you plan on making the cuts. If you are lucky the hardened insert may come out on its own, or be able to be pried out at some point. Otherwise finish the rest of the cuts and then finish the one with the hardened insert last, and dremel it away as needed.

Not that I've tried specifically to remove anti drill pins, but I've used the same method to unstick press fit parts before.
Should work as long as the pin isn't peened or dimpled in place.

First put the plug in the freezer for at least 30 mins, longer would be better, OR if you have access, hit it with CO2, or i'd imagine you could get away with freezing spray (electronics supply shop) or a can of 'duster' turned upside down, spraying it every 10 or 20 seconds, for a second or two, to really knock the temperature of the entire plug down.

Second, with the plug held quite securely with vise-grips, or other locking pliers in a way that you could rap the pliers on a hard surface without the plug popping out of the jaws, and the pin facing the direction of impact, gently, but quickly heat the plug, avoiding directly applying heat to the anti drill pins, being as brass is a fair bit more conductive of heat than steel or carbide, the brass should warm faster, and expand, leaving the pins cold and slightly contracted. I'd try after say 5-10 seconds using a propane torch at close range to heat the brass then smack the grips, not the plug, directly on something very solid. With any luck, the temperature difference will have left some space for the pins to weasel their way out far enough to grab them with some VG's and tug em out.

Keep in mind that the pins are very small, therefore not going to have much inertia, so it's going to take one hell of a whack to get them to move... if nothing happens at first (say 3 whacks, after 10 seconds of heat) heat again for 10 or so seconds and whack again, if it's still not going anywhere, re-freeze and try again.

As I said, I've not tried this my self, but I know the theory works, I've used it on many other things, if I have time tomorrow, I've got a medeco plug with pins I can give it a go with, if I can find time...

Thank you guys for the ideas! Going to start trying least destructive to finally just cutting along the side like I think farmer is eluding to.

Going to start with mikes idea since that is least destructive. Freezing shouldnt be a problem since I miiiiight have access to a -80 C freezer and liquid nitrogen :twisted: :twisted:
U guys think that if I deep freeze this sucker to -196 C then put a torch on it will crack?

No need for the torch. Freeze it with liquid nitrogen, then try the trick listed above where you hold it in a set of vice grips and smack it. The pin will come out guaranteed. So will everything else, as well as shattering. But the pin will come out! :P

-80 freezer and Liq N2..... I'm guessing areospace machining, aluminum, artificial aging chamber..... just a guess... and I'ma have to agree with Gordon... skip the N2 and just freeze the bugger and give it a little tap... if you're going to dip something, go for a master lock, let it soak for about half an hour and take a video of you dropping it in the driveway for all of our satisfaction.... please.... maybe 2 of em... locked to each other :)

Where'd you get access to LN2? :D
As for freezing they reckon that the S&G bigguns (833 and 951) are the only two padlocks to withstand an attack with liquid nitrogen immersion for 30 mins.. Apparently all other locks will shatter, not sure how much of that is true and what's just marketing hype. So it depends what locks you're working on ;)
