Anyone know what this key goes to, or how hard it is to get? It's a cast key, and it's almost square (curved on one of 4 sides--see last photo), but it's got like a 12 or 16 digit number cast into it, along with a month and year of manufacture, along with the customer initials!!!

Key manufacturer is "Vapor" and if you google them, they make transit equipment (bus doors, subway doors, maybe other things?---no keys shown on their website).

I mean, I guess the obvious thing is: "it's a bus door key, stupid", but I'm looking for verification of that.... Or not. PM's cool.



Pixelated portion above is the 12-16 digit number; not clear if it's a part number or serial number (each cast key w/ a new serial number cast?).

I put out a feeler with some transit police, I'll let you know if I hear anything back.

Ok, I heard back. He's just guessing but he thinks that key is from a transit line back east although he was a little surprised it was so short. Usually they have a longer shaft. I presume to make it more difficult to impression the shape of the end and make an improvised key.

Also seen them used - frequently - for water spigots at commercial properties.

I'm familiar with the completely square ones for water spigots and roller skates, but if you see pic three above, if you look carefully at the bottom left side, it's not flat, it's bowed out.

So a square key wouldn't fit the ... pin. Or shaft. (whatever you call what this key operates on). Anyway, a square key wouldn't fit it, unless it was a little bit bigger, but I'm guessing that the exterior dimension is also controlled on the Vapor keyway, meaning a larger (thicker) key wouldn't fit into the keyway. Make sense?

It does make sense. Using my phone to view the pictures, did not see the bowed side. In that case, not personally able to help! Sorry! Sure someone else here will be able to help.

They're not pixellated. That's how they really look.

Just in case, so you can't read his fingerprints! Big Brother IS watching ya know!!

Very similar to two railroad "locks" I have, only they use a common 1/2" socket to open, so I really wouldn't call em locks per se. Used on battery boxes for signals.
