Compared to the shop at work - no
Compared to what I have at home - yes

Looks like everyone agrees. If you don't have a locksmith shop off site, then you actually need MORE key blanks.

I bet you'll still run across plenty of situations where you don't have a blank you need.
In that case, well I guess you'd better buy some of those blanks.
So in short, no, you will probably find you don't have enough blanks.

So it seems that there are two states of key blanks.

No blanks, and not enough blanks.

Well might as well show my board...blue and green part is auto which I don't do much of and bottom portion is set up by the Ilco EZ numbers....always check with me if you need a blank as I might have it, alot of my blanks are Star key blanks from back in the 80's.

Quite nice, J1P. Wish I had the space to have them side by side like you do.

I also organize the blanks (but need to organize the new board, too. Mine are by common name (SC9, M12, etcetera), then by the ILCO number. If I know the common name, it is on the label first, and the ILCO number right below it. They are organized that way because not all blanks have an ILCO number.

All you need is a spreadsheet to keep inventory of those key blanks, you can fill a few more boards before you have too many blanks.

Well, have to say... the answer is no, according to popular opinion. Like they way you think, people.

Remember 12 days ago, when I had just put up that new key board, and there was lots of empty space on it?

Image

Well, my friends at the lock shop that has moved is paring down dead inventory of key blanks. Don't tell my wife, but they gave me a box of blanks today. Weighed the box when it got here to its new home, and it weighed 27 pounds (about 12.25 kg). Have sorted about half of it onto the boards, filling new pegs for new keyways.

Image

Still have to sort the other half box...

And they tell me that there will likely be plenty more by the time they are done paring down dead stock. (They always know they can call me if they need one). :-)

Looks like I don't have too many blanks, just too few pegs to hang them on. Guess I'll have to make another key board. Don't want the other half of the box to feel neglected, sitting in a box on the floor, spending all day and night staring longingly at all the friends up on the boards, do we? That would be downright cruel.

The pegs have not collapsed onto the floor yet, so the board screams moar!!

Tell her you don't want to be seen as an underachiever..

you can never have enogh blanks, you just have to know were they are. I have 4- 4x8 peg boards full of them, most all and hard to find. I got a bunch - about 25 lbs of old blanks from my semi retired locksmith friend, had to sort them and put them in my tackle box. If I wanted to look,, I think I have all blanks. NO auto tho

I'm sure I have a much smaller variety of blanks than most of you - my strategy has been to purchase a starter pack of most common keys, and purchase specific blanks as required. I don't think you can have too many blanks since some of them are unique and can't be replaced.

I have more now. This is an older picture. Now, every peg is filled, some doubled up, and still more that are not on the board. Need to make another board, but no additional space. :(
