LSS CDs

I was given the whole collection of LSS cds after someone passed away and am now trying to figure out how to get them running on my computer. Does anyone here have some experience with this or know of any article about using them on a computer in this century.
I am getting email errors when I try to contact Security.org. I know i will have to get an activation code from the company but even before that step i still need to get the software to run.

Its always unfortunate when going the legitimate way is 10 times harder then just downloading it off Bit Torrent.

Thanks for any help

Re: LSS CDs

Yes Ive followed that first and sent off an email but it returns a Mailer-Daemon error that the address doesn't exist. I don't want to start going down the list of distributors because more then likely I will be contacting all the wrong ones and they wont have any information on this sale.

Re: LSS CDs

The lss site has changed since I registered but I will try and help you

https://www.security.org/lss-tour/LSSREGFORM.CFM

http://www.security.org/lss-tour/SOFTWARE.HTM

https://www.security.org/dial-30/reg1.htm

The black disk has the install files. Run setup.exe

FYI There was a free 3 day demo offered on the security.org site. It doesn't seem to be there any more but can be downloaded
on the net.

Re: LSS CDs

Try mwtobias@security.org

I purchased the CD set when it first came out (very expensive) there is a challenge - response activation system.

Back then I only had dialup and had to leave my PC on for a couple of days waiting for the activation number.

I even kept the PC that it is installed on (Win 98) to avoid the hassle of reactivating it.

One day - about three years after I activated it - I went to look something up and the license had TIMED OUT !!

WTF, I paid a LOT of money for this product and there was a time limit on it. I went and checked all the documentation I had on it and there was NO mention of a time limit. I just figured that since I'd paid for it I could use it for as long as I liked. I would not have had purchased it if I'd known this as I already had the book set.

I wrote to Mr Tobias and got some waffle and was told that I could re activate it but I would be better off updating to the newer version - more $$$$.

Good luck in your quest. Apparently if you have a legit copy you can email your challenge number to "security.org" and they will send the response. Don't turn the PC off till you have entered the response as every time you generate a challenge it is different and so will be the response.

Email Marc first to get the correct address.

Re: LSS CDs

I found a copy of the 3 day legal demo and tried to run it only to be told that it won't work with my 64 bit version of windows.

If any of you run in 64 bit mode you may need to find away around that.

Re: LSS CDs

Windows not good for running older programs - dial up or otherwise - includes printers that run off 2000 - XP also

buy a older computer - run it and keep it off the net is the only way - programs will try to update themselves

causing problems for the end user - legit or not charging a fee for the activation code is common to run program

there are many programs - offered free but require activation $$$$$ this is what you pay for -

lots are scams and possible harmful to your computer - with spyware already built in as a bonus

The only reason I haven't upgraded windows from 7 to 10 is because I fear I'll have to reactivate LSS and I remember what a pain in the donkey it was.

Werewolf, there are thousands of better reasons then having to reinstall LSS NOT to upgrade to Windows 10.

Personally, I think that Win 10 will be the end of Windows as an operating system.

The Chinese, Russian and now Indian Governments have or are developing their own operating systems so that they don't have to use windows. Especially Win 10.

http://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/indian-government-is-launching-its-own-operating-system-boss-to-replace-microsoft-windows-245255.html

I don't know how long you have had LSS installed but if it is like mine you will have to reactivate it after a few years anyway. This might have changed with later editions. I don't know.

Has anyone else with the digital edition of LSS had to reactivate it after a couple of years?

The end of Windows?

I don't think so.

Re: LSS CDs

If I am reading this right, correct me if I am not, there are no terms in the registration or purchase agreement about time restricted registrations yet registrations are?

Why hasn't anyone just legally cracked the software then? It is not fit for purpose after the expiration. That is bad news bears for the seller in some jurisdictions. For a short time it was illegal for Americans to circumvent DRM on things they legally own but that time passed in 2010. Surely someone has already done this somewhere without distributing the content.

I'm coming up on the three year mark for my current installation of LSS+ Govt. Edition in another 30 days. So far it hasn't needed reactivation.

It has been cracked before. However you won't find it being distributed here.

Re: LSS CDs

I went back through my email archive and here is the quote from Mr Tobias.

"We used to put expiration dates on licenses so they could get updated but have not done that for quite some time."

This was December 2013.

Like I said I got the first digital edition of LSS - hence Win98.

So, all should be well with later editions.

I also apologise for saying that Mr Tobias "waffled" Reading the email he was very polite and helpful. I was just "misrembering" as I was a bit peeved as it cost me a lot of money.

Mea Culpa.
