couldnt impress it, cylinder wont remove either, replacing

I took this lock off of a door we lost the key for. Its a kwikset. I bought some blanks and attempted to impression it with no luck. My skills at impressioning need some work. I also was unable to remove the cylinder from the handle. There is a small hole with what I assume should have contained a hex screw, but that is missing. I cant get the cylinder out so im resorting to just replacing the knob with something else.

Before tossing the lock, you might want to look here:

Haha yeah I was doing the key filling outside on that table. I plan to keep the lock and continue to try and impression it.

Fair warning - Kwikset is actually fairly difficult to impression if it has factory pins. Not as bad as a Wilson Bohannan, but still difficult if you are a bit rusty at impressioning.

to remove the cylinder you might try this:

pick the lock and turn it about 45 degrees CW. then take a piece of metal/small screwdriver and insert it into that little hole. push down while pulling on the cylinder. should come right out

Kwikset rekey manual pdf.
page 20 has direction for levers.
Good Luck

Also sometimes it is helpful to remove the spindle first, this allows you to access the set screw.

Use a good light and there is a small hex screw inside that hole. It sometimes gets stripped but you turn it I forget which way for a bit and the lever comes out.

It's been a while since I worked on this one and my coworker was there to help me out.

But you still have to pick it I believe cause it wouldn't make sense any other way.

Put some graphite in there and try to pick it.

I highly recommend progressively pinning your locks when you are rusty/learning impressioning, just like when you learn to pick. The following pinning configurations are good for working up to five pins (X for a pin, _ for an empty chamber)

First Blank:
X _ _ _ _ (First Impression)
_ X _ _ X (Second Impression)
_ _ X X _ (Third Impression)

Second Blank:
X _ X _ X
_ X _ X _

Third Blank:
X _ _ _ X
_ X X X _

Fourth Blank:
X X X _ X
_ _ _ X _

Fifth Blank:

Actually removal is easy, first turn the spindle in the rear, so the handle is unlocked and the lever will turn. Now insert a 3/32 allen wrench into the small hole and unscrew until the screw stops turning, about 3-4 turns. Now the lever will separate from the rest of the lockset and you can shim open or remove the cap.
