Re: Duplicated My First Key On A Machine!

This thread just brought back memories of getting my first DUP in the mail. It was a HPC mini speedex and i still got it. I remember cutting my first key with it. I had it on my garage floor plugged in to the wall and I copied a KW1 and i wanted to do it again with another, but i didnt want to waste my other 4 i only had 5 blanks lol. Now i got 250 packs :)

Congrats Mac! An exciting piece of equipment to add to your arsenal! Very happy for ya :D

Some day, I would love to get one. Old, out-dated, cheap, free... doesn't really matter to me.

I'm glad the machine is working for you Mac. The old locksmith that had that machine before me will be happy to learn it's found a good home!

Re: Duplicated My First Key On A Machine!

just cut my first code cut key using the D&S keys i got from selim. it works fine on my doors but the spacing is a little off when using it on one of the padlocks i have. i need more practice but it is definitely a success!

it's also important to note if the code is written tip to bow or bow to tip.... :P

Re: Duplicated My First Key On A Machine!

Great job, Mac. Have you used a micrometer to both check the depth of cut and the spacing from a shoulder to a peak between bits on the key on both the original key and the copied key? It took a little fine-tuning for me to get mine correct, but it made a huge difference in how well the keys worked.

If your D&S keys are a little off spacing duplicate another set but widen out the cuts a little on both sides. You can do that by setting your original off a hair to one side or the other and then the other side. That set should work a little better for you.

Re: Duplicated My First Key On A Machine!

thanks for the tips.

i'll cut a few different blanks and see how they work.

it also looks like the shoulder on the AXXESS keys that Home Depot uses are a bit off compared to the brass blanks i have...

i made some more keys and i'll see if they work.

Line up/measure from the base of the shoulder at the key blade. Then the position of the shoulder should not matter. Unless you are cutting tip-stop keys (such as BEST), be sure to line up the key tracer on your machine with the shoulder of the key, not the tip. If the blade length from shoulder to tip is longer, it would explain the difference in how well the key works if you are aligning the original key and blank using the key tips. Measuring from the shoulder should still give the same cuts since the shoulder stops the key from entering farther into the keyway.

You may already know that above information, but other new users may not.

Keep us posted!

P.S. Keep in mind that I am not, nor do I pretend to be, a locksmith. Just a hobbiest. Any lockies who see incorrect information from me, post it, so I can learn from your experience! Won't take offense, or else I'd never learn anything!
