Code cutting question

I recently bought a used foley belsaw model 200 and want to add the space micrometer to code cut. Did not want to pay $175 for it on a $75 used machine. So I saw one on eBay, and from the picture built the arm out of some scrap aluminum stock, and bought a nice mic on eBay for $18. Below is the chart I came up with for Schlage and Kwikset. Using a blank in both jaws as a starting point to cut the keys.

My question is does anyone have any other key cuts figured out for this machine that they could share?

Also any ideas, upgrades, or suggestions

KwikSet code cutting

Depth settings .12 .35 .58 .81 1.02 1.25 1.48

Space setting are for wide cuts. Dial in depth, and then first space number, then slide the space to second number. Repeat for each cut. Depth cuts are arrived from a blank Key as Zero - .12 is depth 1
the add .23 to each.

For machine setup:

1. Set space micrometer to zero and align tip guide to shoulder.
2. Set Depth micrometer to zero and then add a key blank to each jaw. From zero duplication setting, with key blank in both sides use above setting to achieve proper cut depth.

For a reasonable price you can just buy a set of space and depth keys on ebay...much easier

First off thanks for responding. I have space and depth keys, and they work pretty good. To me that works okay, but not super precise. Learning to code cut with micrometers can be very precise, when done right. So far the schlage, and the Kwikset cut come out perfect. I can slowly add keyways as I do the math, but if others have some of them worked out even better.

Thanks again, I will save that to a word file. I will still need to use a cut key to get the difference from the key blank zero cut for each vs the amount of blank protruding from the jaw. The best way I know is to take a cut key read the cut number, and put in the cutter jaw, and a blank in the tracer jaw, and lower the cutter until it just barely touches the key, then subtract that number from cut depth difference. Then that amount can be added to each cut to determine the factor.

I also have a Foley-Belsaw 200.
If possible could you post a photo of the mount and micrometer you have installed for spacing.
I like my Foley machine,......But, have wondered why they didn't give you a way to measure spacing.
Seems kind of important.?
They give you way to control depth.
I have Depth/space keys or use a caliper to measure.
Also make my own "0" bit Space keys. Then its easy to dial down to the cut you need.
For me it was real important to adjust my machine (Calibrate) So Zero on my Depth guide was actually Zero.

Here is the box i build to house the 200 for hauling around, and secure storage. Then pictures of the unit uninstalled, and installed. in the pictures i have space and depth keys in the jaw. I don't use them now as i have figured out the cuts for at least schlage and kwikset so far.

The arm is made of 1/2" aluminum stock from a scrap yard. i cut it with a jig saw, and drilled the bottom hole with a 5/8" drill bit , and the top with a 3/8" then drilled the side of both and tapped them, and inserted a set screw.

Oh since then i have added a code cutter wheel, and a code tracer.

Steve, Foley does make this same setup, but it cost around $175 now. I have about $25 in the micrometer, and arm, and around $45 in the cutter and tracer.

I solved the mystery. While my FB 200 seemed properly calibrated. It was off just a tad. I spent some time really setting it up again. Now it cuts code with out any adjustments. If you are making a number 3 cut on a Schlage just dial back the micrometer .045 and such. I downloaded the code charts mentioned above, and made a notebook. I am slowly doing the math so I have the code cuts for each key type.

I am currently coding a Key-Bitting-Calculator (html, javascript) which is pretty much like http://kstoerz.com/locksport/bitting/ but works offline and has some minor additional features. Though the main purpose was my personal usage, I now intend to make it available to others, too, by releasing the code. # Questions
Lacking a deeper knowledge of keys and locks however I am afraid to mess / to have messed things up, so here are some questions:
(1) I think about adding a key-tip to the images (maybe it is *pointless* though)
  • Can one assume that the tip of the key is 90 degree sharp? Does it depend on the bitting system or should it be manually setable?
  • Is it important, that the key-tip is centered in the middle of the key, or can I center it between the last cut and the top line?
(2) Currently the script , when in "plateau"-mode creates "mountains" between cuts, even between 0 to 0 (0 being a "no-cut") -> that wouldn't be an the blade anymore
  • Can one assume like the smallest depth in the bitting system was the width of the key-blade, or would that be problematic in any way?
I'd like to keep the options to a minimal but useful level (stuff has to get done xD). It would be pretty to overload everything but that would become quite unformortable imho.

# Screenshots
Key-images 1-3 show the same key. #1 has an imperial grid, #2 a metric grid, #3 doesn't have a fill, uses a line-profile and additional circle-marks. #4 shows what currently happens in plateau mode when the script tries to calculate the space between shallow cuts. I wanted to upload an svg, too but .txt / .svg are not allowed for attachments.
