Back on the grid, baby...cooking with gas and frying the ozone!

Yeah, you're right...when Mother Nature wants to, she can be a royal bitch...

Ike was a Cat 2 when it made landfall - but the 20 yr cycle we're in calls for a Cat 5 to hit sometime in the next decade - because we're overdue.

I tell you... I'm just waiting for DC to get hit.. last few storms that came up the cost came very, VERY close... I have a feeling we'd be LUCKY to look like Texas does right now... Everyone, every thing here is unprepared for much of any show of Mother Nature, hell, 3" of snow will shut down the government for a day or two, I can only imagine what a category 3-4 would do to us...

Best of luck repairing, and reclaiming everything down there,

I've been thru several hurricanes here in the Houston area - Carla in '61 (Cat 4) and Alicia in '83 (Cat 1) and now Ike. My advice is to have fuel for your car, batteries for your flashlight - or a kerosene lamp. Deep cycle marine batteries and a dc to ac inverter are handy to keep your laptop going. If you use a full size PC, you're toast. The big machine will suck your batteries down.

If you have a home - get a small generator to run your fridge and a few small fans. BTW - secure the generator to a car bumper with a lock & chain. The thieves here were trolling around at night stealing unsecured generators and throwing them in the back of their trucks.

Cash - a lot of it on hand. You'll need it the first couple of days because all credit card transactions are nil until some type of ac power and phone lines are running.

Pace yourself. Don't get all freaked out by the media - they make it worse than it needs to be. Have a good battery powered AM/FM radio on hand and forget about your cell phone. Cell systems will become overloaded and text may be the only way to communicate. Even a CB or FRS radio beats waving your arms.

Protect yourself and expect to be self-supporting/reliant for at least 72 hours - if not more.

Edit - Almost forgot...don't forget the 38 Special for the bullet to the brain of the undead coming out of the ground! Yikes!
