I was wondering how you would go about cleaning a veeeeeeery old Kwikset deadbolt. I was trying to pick it, (mounted on a door) and when I took my pick out, it had this nasty blackish brown stuff on it, although the pins felt OK inside the lock.

I can already tell I'm going to get flack for this, but I have used WD40 on really rusted stuck locks. Brake cleaner is good stuff. If you decide to use these you need to follow up with a good lubricate because after WD40 or brake cleaner evaporates its just metal on metal, and that's not good for your lock.

Some people recommend LPS-1, PoxyLube and Synco Dri-lube even though they catch dirt. Lots of lock shops swear by Locksaver spray, and I hear good things about Balistol.

I wouldn't recommend flushing the old lube out of the lock while it is on the door unless you want to make a real mess. Remove it first, then flush it. For new locks a drop or two of gun oil is plenty good enough for me.

I would be the wrong guy to ask because I like the smell of degreasers, oil, gasoline, solvents, lubricant etc. I see where you are possibly going though. They stink, and if they are petroleum based that stink is going to stick around. Forever... not really, but it isn't going anywhere soon. I can't speak for locksaver spray, but I believe LPS-1, PoxyLube and Synco Dri-lube are particle based lubricant's suspended in quickly evaporating fluids. They shouldn't smell as strong as a powerful petroleum based solvent.

Yeah, it's tough on the after-sex laundry bill and broads think it smells kinda funny...but oh well, cheaper than that Astro-Naut Glide lube you were talking about....

Nah, it kind of loses it's excitement when you start to ad perfume. The divine smell is not supposed to be on purpose.
