Topic symbols

What do the symbol next to forum topics mean? From what I can see, the blue means a topic with an unread post and the yellow means read. But the unread blue symbol have different colors of triangles inside them and different outlines. Same thing with the squares inside the yellow "post read" symbol. That also has a white outline that sometimes accompanies it. I've been wondering about the variations for a long time but can't figure it out!
