Project????

Is this the next project for 00247 ? I say no. The lock, knob and handle would look nice with a nickel finish, though.

Yeah... You all are probably wondering if too many paint fumes have caused me to go stark raving mad? Or maybe I'm just bat shit crazy? Don't send the guys in the white suits with the straight jacket just yet.

After looking at bitbuster's link to Craigslist, I spotted the lock on the inner door as one that is missing on a Halls safe that I have. Also, the inner compartment was there with it's lock intact. It is not uncommon for old square safes to have these items missing and correct ones are hard to find. Parts like these used to turn up on Ebay but not so much anymore.

I needed to get over to the Wausau area on some other business so it was a good opportunity to check this safe out. After a phone call with the seller I expected a, how should I say it, maybe... a unique experience. My intuition was correct. An elderly guy with failing health who hobbles around, quite dirty, and although it was mid morning was downing a beer. He was having a smoke but damn near hacked a lung out between puffs. When people need to empty out old buildings or estates they call him. He scrounges up what he can and sells it in an old shed that used to be his shop. Fair amount of junk but a lot of old cool stuff to look at too. A nice old guy that I had a good conversation with.

The safe turned out to be a Herring Hall Marvin thick wall fire safe. Yes the whole lock assembly was missing but I was pleased to see it still had some of the hinge finials as I have a HHM that is missing one. The inner door lock was indeed the correct one for my Halls safe, and the inner compartment was complete. So I was pleased that the safe offered some missing parts that I was in need of and handed over the $20 he was asking. I skipped my usual haggling as it seemed he could use the money, but you never know. I know a similar old fellow who you would swear is dirt poor but has bank accounts that many can only dream of. But he won't spend a dime on himself, his health, or to improve his home.

So the safe was loaded up on my tilt snowmobile trailer and off I went. Once home, I pulled the inner compartment which was locked hoping the lock would be the one one I need for another safe compartment. Not so lucky this time. After pulling the door on it the lock is of a different bolt pattern. The compartment rattled so I had hoped for something good inside. Two sea shells was the treasure this time. lol I will pull the wheels, door handle, and the inner door, the rest is destined for the scrap pile.

Re: Project????

Well, $20 for the parts is quite a steal. Glad you were able to salvage a few things off of it.
