Red faced , as i sent a nice chap a few picks over xmas and dread

Going to bite the bullet and buy some propper kit

When you said "you big fat bastard", I automatically looked up - as that is how my neighbors refer to me all the time. It's never "Hey, howya doin'" - no.... it's fat bastard this and fat bastard that.....

Big eyes? I've suffered from "your eyes are bigger than your stomach" all the time!

a lot of people suffer from this,including myself,when i first started making picks, due to the fact you have nothing to compare to...no relative perspective...
i get many,many e-mails asking how to size picks correctly,and to be honest, it is quite difficult to determine the sizing/thickness without manufactured picks in hand, to compare with.
so, no..you are FAR from alone there...

Thanks AWOL , i am going to visit UK Lockpicker and invest to finally
gain proper perspective !

nozza, drop into a locksmith and buy some plugs with the profiles you pick most often. Then get some pins, and shape the picks until you're happy that you can pick any combination of high-lows.

I don't go by any specific measurements, I just make them to suit. Things like medeco that have non-standard pin heights can be easier if you're not just using something with the same dimentions as an HPC hook.

Many thanks Gutter Clown but i doubt very much if they would be very helpful in this respect as he visibly flinched when i told him i was an amateur lockpicker , and openly admitted that he drilled lockouts so he could charge for a new lock , but then again i've got nothing to lose , so what the hell ! (i asked about vacancies and he told me he'd be laying
off a guy if things didn't pick up . I assume the guy is gone now.)

i,ve fallen into this trap myself, It pays to get them into a ruck of different keyways, They look asthetically A1 but just don,t fit or they,re on the thick side. So that,s when the fine tuning begins then with perserverence the start to loosen up and then bingo the lock slaying begins ,,,

Thanks for all the positive words guys , i must admit though
it really is becoming easier as time goes by , experience is
always going to be the best way to improve and making
mistakes is just something we all have to deal with !
Besides if i make a pick oversize , i can grind the **** down.
