Bought a vanity license plate today at an auction. What would be, short of heat source, needed to take those super sticky month and year stickers off an aluminum plate? I've tried Xacto knife and putty knife plus I sprayed them with PowerBlaster, to no avail. Stickers are 1 5/8" x 1".

Try acetone or one of the citrus based "goo gone" like chemicals.

On my nice vehicles I remove the yearly stickers every year instead of piling them on top of each other. Hey, the licence plate needs to look good too. Depending if the plate is painted, covered in a printed vinyl, or in some states a plastic plate, acetone may be to aggressive and cause damage to the substrate. I like to use a plastic razor blade to gently work the sticker off not worrying about the glue. Gently warming it may help. Then follow up with mineral spirits, which is not to aggressive, to slowly soften the adhesive. Goo Gone or WD40 may work well too. Testing in a small spot for negative reactions is a wise move.

Denatured alcohol. Even boiling water works to loosen the adhesive.

Hmm. PLASTIC razor blades... I never knew of these.
I could see a lot of uses for those. I'd like to get a box.

Any particular brand you'd recommend 00247?

Most auto parts stores have them. Often they have the one sided white ones which are ok but not the best. My favorites are the Scraperite double sided blades. I got mine from beacongraphics.com when ordering other supplies. They are also available on Ebay and Amazon. They work great for certain things but not everything. I spent 15 years applying and removing large format graphics. Usually used regular razor blades (fiberglass gelcoat truck bodies) but on paint or delicate surfaces the plastic blades worked well.

You could try heat it up with a hairdryer and slowly peel it away then use lighter fluid to clean any glue left over. The heat melts the glue a bit then the main trick is peeling it at the right angle to avoid it tearing.

I use benzine cleaner for this purpose. As far as I know it attacks only rubber - all other plastics, paints etc. stay unchanged.
