hi, so i am fairly new to this amazing sport, i recently came upon the HU66 quick decoder and since i own a VW passat i decided that thgis would be a good investment in case i ever locked my keys in my vehicle. i purchase it on ebay for i believe $70.00 and of course it came from china so took about a month to recieve ive had it fpr about 4 months now and ive watch countless videos of the step by step process of how it works. not one video detailed any infor mation on the circlular part (which makes part of the decoder slide up and down). so my question is what does that piece do exactly bec i have zeroed all the pins on both sides of the key (not sure if they are called that). tried numerous times to get my vehicle unlocked i even tried on my moms audi a4 no luck at all. im just hoping i didnt get ripped off. that would certainly suck.

From the looks of it, the circle part slides a piece forward across the sliders. It will only be used for inserting and extracting the tool.

I own a VW Jetta and have tried the lishi HU66 with no success at all, on my car and on others. According to Mr. Locksmith (video's on youtube) Volkswagen cars are the cars that they have the most difficulty working on so that should give you an idea of what you're up against.

Is that right I had no idea. Which cars do they mainly work for then ? If you don’t mind me asking?

I do have a Smart. I also tried to be able to have an emergency pick and later to have a tiny emergency key chain key, that I can wear when doing sports. I found no specific Lishi for the Smart, just a Lishi for a Citroen which has the same key way. The key blade is longer in the Smart, so I had to file some of the shoulder. Finally that one picked Smart locks. Then I tried to find the encoding. Wafer on the left, wafer on the right, up and down. I could not find an encoding the machine liked. So I finally I shipped the key around to get a copy.

With the Volkswagen the situation is probably a bit better. There are dedicated Volkswagen picks, but Lishi has different versions, so it can't be that easy too. The Lishi picks are probably more forgiving than a self-impression tool. And a self-impression tool must be of good quality, else it won't work ever. But a Lishi requires a bit more skill. If the aim is to just have an emergency key, than the $70 would have bought you a real key copy.

I agree, a spare key would have been a lot cheaper.
Vw locks are the most forgiving of the series in my experience and the quick keys work very well.
Dont practice on the locks you rely on.
Im not sure why anyone would buy a pick decoder incase they lock their key in the vehicle.
The goso picks open vws in seconds if you just want to open.
I have a few turbo decoders and they work on their respective vehicles amazingly, I also have a full set of lishis but I rarely use them.

To address the OP - the circular part, if not used right will result in no openings, ever! It slides back and forth and exists in order to move all of the wafers up to their most extreme positions. The tool is reset (zeroed) and inserted with the shim (round part) pushed all the way forward. Then, when fully inserted into the lock (the correct way up, this bit is crucial), it is retracted so that the self impressioning part can work. Once picked (or not), the shim (round part) is pushed forwards again so that the tool can be extracted otherwise the tool will be stuck inside the lock.

HU66 is the easiest auto lock to open on the planet (of the more recent ones anyway, the last 20 years or so). They can be easily picked, raked, self impressioned, decoded, overlifted. Either by hand, using hand picks, or using one of the many, many dedicated tools out there.

It has more opening tools for it than any other auto lock. It has a propensity to rake very easily, especially in the locked direction; then you use a plug spinner to get it to unlocked. Lishi have (at least) 3 generations of tools for the HU66 and from my experience they all work well. You have to make sure it is in the right way up.

There is an "inner groove pick" which is basically a sprung rake; that works really well too (locked direction easier again). They overlift easily too.

HU66 is the lock that every beginner in auto locks starts with.
