How to masterkey a lock.

That guage you used to measure the cuts is that universal for all key or is it specific to kwikset?????

Different brands of lock use different depths for the cuts, so you need an appropriate decoder for the key. The decoder Kokomolock was using in the video looks like the LAB 5-in-1 guage (which covers the more popular North American residential/retail locks: Kwikset, Weiser, Schlage, Weslock and Master). Most suppliers sell a range of different gauges: lockpickshop.com.

I've been wondering how you do it. Myself, I key 'em to 66666, drop the drivers and stack up .024 pins till the keys crunch 'em open once then snatch the money and escape. Till the .024's are gone anyway, then I drop any pinstacks that don't match on the keys. It's easier and cheaper, but not as crunchy. Not that your method is inferiour or anything... but mine allows for a more maximum master keyage.

Nice job! it all makes a bit more sense now. i didnt think it was terribly difficult.

MKing isn't hard to DO, but there are other things to know: For instance, if you change a lock to work on a random key that's not part of the system, you can no longer guarantee there won't be interchanges because you broke the system. Also, the more times you do it, the worse it gets. I had to rekey 200 suites in a building because of that once!

Unless the system was set up with constant depths in certain positions, you don't want any of the same cuts in the MK as in the change key.

No key in a system should be all the same cuts, like all 9's-too easy to pick. Same with "ramped cuts" especially ramping toward the nose-too easy to pull the key out In other than the neutral position.

The pin stack in a lock can't be too high; if it is it can be real hard to insert/withdraw the key and it can eventually collapse the springs.

Too thin master pins or too many are asking for trouble.
