Talking to a lock...

Typically when I work (play) on a lock and I have gone front to back a few times and it still hasn't opened for an unknown reason I will release some pins to see if they were overset and try to repick them with less tension.
If that doesn't work, then I start getting and chatty and "talk my way through" the lock.

Yesterday I was waiting for my plane to be de-iced, and I had three locks in my jacket pocket and my basic picks.
Lock number one and three were no issue, (Lock number three had spools btw! I'm new to them so that was exciting).
Lock number two was giving me grief, so a conversation ensued:

self: "All right lock, why aren't you opening up for me here... "
lock: "..."
self: "Silent treatment eh? Ok let's see what we have, number one is up , number two is up, number three.... "
lock: "..."
self: "... not too sure, I'll come back to you in a second. Five is up. I can't tell on four. That third pin might be three or four. "
lock: "..."
self: "Ok, hook, you're out. Half diamond, you're in. Number three won't move.... less tension... less tension... less tension... "
lock: "..."
self: "Ha! That got three. Yep there's four behind a long three. Just nudge it and home free...I said.... nudge it.... Why you gotta play me like this lock? "
lock: "..." ( :bird: )
self: "Hmmmm maybe something is still overset, or overset again... front to back , everything is up.... ok ease of tension let just one pin fall.... "

lock: "..click." (turns open)

self: (fist pump) :hbg:

I hope one other person on this earth does this :)

Re: Talking to a lock...

How did you get past TSA with lockpicks?

Usually my dialog with locks goes something like this:

self: "This back pin is a fucking piece of shit"
lock: Trolololol. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z4m4lnjxkY)
self: FUCK
lock: Lululul.... click click click click click click
self: *thoughts about putting this lock into a Blendtech blender*
lock: Your tears they are delicious. Om nom nom nom
self: Don't... make me get the big peterson
lock: It won't fit bro, do you even lift bro? Your arms they look like chickens, and your chest looks like a wet blanket...
self: Nice bitting you piece of shit... fuck
lock: Squeeze me harder with your vice pussy
lock: Your tension fuels my hatred!
self: You're going in the drawer until you chill the fuck out

HAHA oh wow I had fun reading that Xeo.

I fly out of a smaller regional airport, non international flights. There is little to no security for pilots. Just those evil passengers.

Re: Talking to a lock...

Lol yeah I can be a bit of a smartass; but seriously yes talking your way through any mechanical process can be very helpful in making sense of whats going on.
Self talk can help you visualize whats going on in there. Focus your attention, filtering out distractions etc. It can help in decision making, what to do and when etc. Lastly it helps control cognitive and emotional response making it easier to stay on task. Or in my case keeping me from throwing the damn lock through the wall
So talking to your locks... not a damn thing wrong with it.

Re: Talking to a lock...

Since I work at an airport I took the initiative a few months ago to go ask the TSA if picks are legal to take on a flight. The nice officer looked it up on the official "banned" list of items, it is NOT there. We tried a more general discription, still no problem. Fairly recently tools up to 6" (I think?) are allowed in carry on luggage. Now that is for the federal allowance, it does not take into consideration local laws and ordinances. And finally there is the catch all wording that the government loves; final permission lies with the "local authority". Which means when the items can't be found in the book, the agent gets to make the call. Just about guaranteeing you will get your picks taken from you. By the way, I also talked with the USPS and they have no restrictions either.

Re: Talking to a lock...

I guess this whole thing is where the concept of "feedback" comes from that people talk about online. How the lock is communicating what's happening to you through feel.
Any time I put in a lot of tension I get lots of "click, click, click" as answers to my questions.

Oldfast: bridging the gap between lock convo and lock porn. Good on ya.
P.S. I just read a feature on safe manipulation and now I know what's going on in your graphs you do! I gotta get me one of those once I can deal with all spool drivers in my locks.
