Repinning Question

Got a Slage deadbolt to try the picking exercise described in most forums. You're supposed to do this with standard pins. Thought I could at least start with this lock. Opened it up and found 4 spools. I have a really cheap Kwikset with standard pins but the driver pins are a little longer. I think I can use them anyway but will I have to change the springs ? If not, will they change the feel and feedback of the pins binding and setting?

Go ahead and put in the kwikset driver pins in the schlage and leave the schlage springs in it. It wont change the feel or feedback of the pins binding or setting.

Why not just do the exercise on the kwikset? It's certainly easier to add/remove pins from. Not to mention that it being a fairly easy lock to pick will help as well, and the looser tolerences tends to make the binding pin more pronounced. Then you can add spools to the kwikset once you're really good at it SPP with all 5 pins, that gets interesting due to the lousy tolerances int he kwiksets...

The Kwikset is very cheap and you don't get any feedback from it at all. It was given to me out of a set of four key n knobs and deadbolts all keyed alike. If you tap on the plug with the handle of the pick it feels and sounds like plastic. Got no feedback. Thanks kokomolock and elbowmacaroni. Thought it would work but wasn't sure.

Like Elbow hit on, I too like to take a Kwikset and jumble the pins around and use for picking practice, then I add spools and stuff, no matte how cheap they are, practice is practice, and it's fun too!
