Re: Help a noob out

Since I'm a beginner myself I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I started about 6 months ago. I started out being way to heavy handed and gradually started to easy off on tension. I started learning to be easy with my pick and not use it as a pry bar. It takes very little force in this hobby. If you are using alot of force, then stop, back off and start again. Forget about raking. Force yoursef just to use a shorthook. I started with master #3's I got me a couple where the bitting was easy. You can see the key in the package before you buy it ya know? Light tension, lightly touch each pin, find the one that will not move(binding pin). Once you have found this pin, slowly and lightly raise it up until you feel a suttle click. The wrench will also slightly move. Go in and find the next and repeat. I still practice on my master 3#'s every day. The more you practice and can actually feel these things everyday the faster you will progress.

Re: Help a noob out

You got it, you just have to practice, this is where we lose so many new people to the hobby, they have a hell of a time and get frustrated and then they are done, if you want to be good at anything you just have to practice, I picked every lock I could get my hands on for at least 2 hours a day for almost a year! I still am not the greatest but any lock below a Medeco, I have fair success with. And someday, Medeco is going to be mine as well!
I have been in the souls of many women, but I always end up on the soles of there shoes.

Re: Help a noob out

Longlife of your picks is proportional to the tension you put on your
wrench !
Less tension = less bent/broken picks
If you feel frustrated , just put 'em down for 30 minutes and distract
yourself for a bit until you have full composure !
