Whatever is the most rigid and still durable. I'd just vote standard spring steel, but that could be any old grade of spring steel. I don't know how strong peterson's government stuff is, but I'd bet it has some kind of special heat treat. So I guess for no more than curiousity is concerned it's peterson's good stuff. Peterson's finest proprietary pick steel homebrewed... yes, I like that very much

i also use spring steel religiously,the rigidity/price ratio cant be beat.
its too bad companies dont offer higher quality steel options ,
(without charging an arm and a leg.)
something like majestic,but with peterson quality steel.

not to put peterson down at all, they are simply amazing picks
but i have found that homebrew picks work out really nicely. I have been using the ones rangerjo3 sent me and they are steller, but of course if i was given a peterson set they would be put to use =) lol but homemade i cheaper, ... and if you break a homemade, go out and make another =P

if you are lucky enough to have access to industrial steel cutting bandsaw blades,or
the like,fantastic,but the majority of us are stuck with
wiper inserts,hacksaw blades, and various other implements of ghetto innovation.
just the steel,please.....=)

I think HPC-type picks are made from Carbon Spring Steel.

Just wonderin....why would you need picks on a desert island? If there is a place that has food/shelter that is locked, I am not worried about NDE. If there are no locks, I take whatever material it is easiest to make useful things out of, ie fish hooks, knives, needles.

I actually don't actually use alot of what would commonly be called carbon spring steel, only because I can't get my hands on the good stuff for dirt cheap. I honestly don't know why more companies don't offer a variety of quality steels for their individual properties, or do this peterson gimick where the high grade material is "government" steel. It's good marketing. It has me curious. Is there another company besides Peterson who offers differing grades of material?
