Teaching people how to pick!!!

So, I ran across this master #3up, the kind that you buy and insert an existing m1 key and hammer the back and it pins it to that key. Anyways, It was an easy pick, and I was thinking, I found my cheaper than cheap made Foley-Belsaw picks, the ones that come with the course, and I grabbed the snake rake and the tension wrench, explained the rules about not picking locks that don't belong to you and the harsh punishment if you break the rules. I then put them in the hands of my 7 year old step-son and taught him how to pick the lock, He can pick it every time in about 5 seconds, I only wish that somebody would have done the same for me when I was that young. It is so neat to watch his eyes light up everytime that shackle pops!!

Re: Teaching people how to pick!!!

That's awesome! Its very cool that you can share that with him. My 5 year old daughter loves to sit with me at the table and open locks with keys while I am picking. She also loves to play with pins and springs when I am taking locks apart. She has raked one master lock open while I applied tension, but that is all so far. I'm still trying to figure out how to teach her exactly what is going on inside a lock. Drawings are no good as she has a severe visual impairment. I'm thinking about making a large cut-away style lock cylinder out of wood so that she can get her hands on it to understand what is going on. Any suggestions are welcome!

My wife says I have ruined her. Here is a picture my wife sent me from her phone of my daughter 'working' at school.

the hard part is making him understand what he's doing while he gets it open, he know's he opened it, but he has no idea at all why it opened, he is just too young to teach how to single pin pick, he just don't understand, but any locks that can be raked open will certainly be passed down to him!

Yeah I showed some of my mates when I was in my teens how to pick locks when I first started. Those heavy-handed brutes kept breaking my hacksawblade hooks :(

Never shown anyone since, If they want to learn they can find out themselves :P

Yeah...I have felt the pain of having a friend ruin one of my favorite hooks before. I now carry in my case a couple of old hooks that I made when I first started picking to let newbies use. However, I don't usually seek out people to teach them how to pick.

That is pretty much how I feel now. The last person I tried to show how to pick was my bro-in-law. For Christmas I made him a small Bogota pick set because picking seemed like the kind of thing that would interest him. I was trying to explain the concept and he kept interrupting, saying that he understood and that its 'just like you do in Splinter Cell'. I quickly gave up because he didn't want to listen. My five year old listens much better than he does.

However, having said all of that, I do enjoy the look on a friend's face when they pick open a lock the first time. So if one is willing to listen, then I am happy to try and teach them (Just not with my good picks ;) ).
