I have a Yale mortise cylinder, that gave me a lot of troubles. I ended up gutting it without picking to ensure everything was mechanically sound. Turns out the cap holding the springs and top pins in was moving a lot. I gutted it.

In the picture below, The pins are very mushroom-like, almost like half a spool pin (B). In addition, the core looks to have two rows of holes (A) but I can't determine WHY. Is it manufactured like this for efficiency and re-use of the core?

Any help would be appreciated - this is my first experience with Yale.

The extra set of shallow holes in the plug is likely for construction keying. The cylinders are originally keyed to a construction key while the home is being built using small ball bearings. When the resident uses their key for the first time, the balks deposit into the shallow holes, rendering the construction key unusable from then on out.

Can't help you with the key pins, though.
