Hey folks, wondering what a good lock lube would be for outdoor use. Specifically for the bag locks on my motorcycle. Just had to replace one due to it siezing up after a cold wet winter. Using wd40 silicone for now...

As far as readily available lubricants, I use TriFlow. Have heard good things about LockSaver, but that's generally not usually carried at a general hardware store.

Many guys including Jeff Moss would swear by Houdini which I havent personally tried but I know it smells great. Its an oil base so may not be the best for outdoor use which also puts WD40 off the list. I personally use a dry lube made by PB Blaster or PBlaster which is awesome because its not oil based, it leaves a nice layer of lube and it dries in seconds literally. My only down side of it is that it drys white.

I have also tried WD40 spesicilit dry lube but its not as good as PD blaster becuase it doesnt dry as fast, it actually take a few minutes to dry. Im also not too crazy about how it feels after its dry.

The Abus Maintenance Spray is good. It's a dry teflon lubricant. Here's one seller just picked off the first page of a search:

LPS1 is really good stuff and can be used on pretty much anything else from hinges to firearms so a can will not sit going to waste. It also displaces water.

My choices would be LPS1 or Superlube for general lubrication of locks; Houdini for cleaning; PB Blaster or Kroil for dissolving rust etc.

Riyame, you bring up an interesting point on the multi purpose lubricant, has anyone used gun cleaners/lubes? I have a bunch of Ballistol and some Eezox and of course RemOil and Hoppes lying around...

eezox is a dry lubricant, and dries pretty quick and leaves a slick coating...

Jeff have you tried PB Blasters dry lube? Thats the stuff I mentioned above. Its actually great stuff and found at Home Depot for $6 a can.

Has anyone tried WD40 specialist degreaser? Its a new thing which they offer free after you mail in a receipt that you paid for it. I did that but havent go around to trying it. Ill post the results once I try it but it smells good and a foam.

No I have not tried the PB Blaster dry lube but I may check it out. They have a good line of products plus they are made here in Cleveland!

That you are correct on, their penetrating stuff is great so def check out their dry lube. I really want to get a bottle of Teflon dry just to compare but Im expecting the same or very similar results. Except the drying white part lol unless Teflon dries why too.

Quick question - what's the gloop that they put in padlocks usually? I keep disassembling locks (so far an Abloy 362, Abloy 330 and an Ingersoll) and keep leaving "lock blood" all over my pinning mat. It doesn't need to be fancy, I just want to get hold of their same lube that the manufacturers are using so I can re-grease these parts before re-assembly. Any ideas?

It is a grease that is used on the cam and locking balls. I normally use silicone paste grease, since it is thick like the original lube used. Do NOT use the paste inside the lock core, as it will prevent the pins from sliding freely.
