MacGyver101's Lock Collection (Picture-Heavy)

A number of folks have been diligently photographing and sharing their new finds, and I realized that it had been a couple of years since I’d sat down with my camera and documented some of the more interesting locks I’ve come across. My collection spans from ancient times (around 100AD) to modern electronic locks, and everything in between. My apologies for the rather picture-heavy post, but hopefully there’s something of interest. :)

I’m not going to try to document everything in the collection; I’ll just pick out some highlights...

Forever Lock: Taiwanese bicycle U-Lock with sabot key carrier

In addition, I have a similarly-large collection of picks, tools and books that I haven’t had time to photograph, but I’ll add to the thread when I get another free afternoon.

I’m happy to answer any questions that anyone might have about the locks, their history, patent drawings, etc… or if anyone else has some info they’d like to pass along, I’d be really grateful!

Thanks for looking!

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayum! I really like the Sezam Lock and the Bramah Padlock. But, theres no favorites here. The collection as a whole is amazing. I really like the Maxis padlock too. You need a NAPEC Bicentric padlock. Or did I miss it in the awesomeness that just drowned me?

Magyver... can I be in your will to inherit your lock collection when you die? ;) (Hopefully that won't be for a long time, but I can be patient.)

Beauty!
I always laugh when I see these funky 12 pin cylinders etc., imagining some hood walking up thinking he is going to pick the front door lock and finding one of these.

Delicious collection

I like your well-organized standard-size storage boxes with variable sized compartments... How many boxes you have in total? :p

Thanks for the kind words! Collecting and restoring locks in definitely a passion of mine. :)

kk500 wrote:I like your well-organized standard-size storage boxes with variable sized compartments... How many boxes you have in total? :p

Well, there are actually a few boxes that I didn't photograph, because they're packed with duplicates, or less interesting locks. (I have a couple of cases of Master padlocks from the 50's and 60's, for example, in original boxes, plus some newer money bags, more mounted safe locks, etc..) At the moment, the collection spans two dozen cases, plus a large tool case of picks and tools, and a good-sized shelf of books. I teach a graduate course in computer security; I do a lecture on the history of locks every year, and used to drag everything in as part of the talk... I stopped bringing everything once it passed the 400lb (180kg) mark, and am a little more selective now.

What do you say about that? Wow. Those anti-dynamite are nice, have you opened one up? **EDIT** I seen it now.** The anti-gunpowder ones are almost solid with blast vents milled out, really cool.
