Is this Abus a cheap knockoff ??

Hi All

Not having seen any other Abus disc locks I can’t say but judging by the POOR quality of this lock I find it hard to believe that it was made in Germany.

The body of the lock is pitted. The stamps are not very good. Even the brass of the lock looks cheap and unfinished.

Compared to a similar Lockwood, made in China, the difference in finish, and quality of the locks is apparent. Even Chinese Master disks have a better finish.

On the back of the lock it says “Lock company Germany” not made in Germany. The box says made in Germany …. High quality… etc. etc. Interestingly the lock was not in the box when it arrived.

I suspect that I was ripped off.

On doing some research I found a gutted cheap disk lock on LP101 with nothing (no Brand) stamped on it other than “Stainless-Steel” and the font and stamp were exactly the same as this one.

My question is for those familiar with these locks.

Is this a cheap knockoff or do the Germans really make shoddy products?? I suspect (hope) the former.

Here are some Pics. The last one is the back of the lock.

Cheers.

I cannot say anything about that particular lock you have, but most Abus locks are made in China.

Re: Is this Abus a cheap knockoff ??

Thanks guys.

Looks like it is a genuine Abus.

What a disappointment.

Other Abus locks that I have seen reek of quality - this one reeks of crap !!

You just have to look at it angrily and it opens.

If I'd paid $2 I wouldn't mind so much but I paid full price, expecting a "quality Abus lock".

Way to go Abus !!! (or I should say Assa-Abloy). The Chinese do make some quality locks e.g the current Yales are very well made but like everything else they will build to your budget.

Think I'll stop -- can feel the blood pressure rising..........

Anyway, thanks for the pics and clearing it up.

Cheers
