So I bought a Kaba 8 cam lock on eBay a little while back, and decided that one of my desk drawers needed a little more security...

Image

My desk is old, but it's real wood, not cheap laminate like most things you see today. I got it on Craigslist for forty bucks. The lock cost about half that.

Image

Hole drilled. Almost all locks like this use a 7/8ths hole. Look at all the pretty wood!

Image

Checking the fit and alignment. Looks good.

Image

Flush with the top of the drawer. So far, so good.

Image

Some splintering on the back from the drill bit. Should have put tape down, would have prevented this. Oh well.

Image

Checking bolt throw.

Image

No recess for the bolt. Well, I've got a way to fix that!

Image

Using chalk to mark the location of the recess.

Image

Faint, but visible. Gives me a place to start.

Image

No router available. That's okay. I've got an old woodworking chisel.

Image

Hole is just about ready. Might clean in up a bit later, and mount the strike plate that came with the lock.

Image

Moment of truth....

It works! And now my junk drawer is secure!

the pics are great, and i've been considering a similar task with an old lagard safe lock that i manipulated some time ago (it's now collecting dust). i figure i might put it on my work desk to give it that 'secure' look, considering it's only made of wood. finding a place for every lock is one of the most fun parts, after collecting them.

Fun project. I watched a video a long time ago of a locksmith doing a similar install and he used lipstick on the bolt to mark the position for the hole, always thought that was a good tip.
