The Keys. Im not sure if they were factory pinned, but lock 1 keys and cylinder have C2927, and lock 2 has C2928 stamped on it. The difference is that *28 has the 4th pin 1 bigger.(key is 1 cut lower) They are the "E" keyway. 2 operating keys each, but no control

Re: Riyame's Collection

Oh man, the anticipation while waiting for those beauties to arrive must have been wonderful! Thanks for posting em'.

On the BEST locks: One key, as you mentioned will open the lock. This is the operating key. The other key, with slightly different heights for the bitting, is the control key. This one, just like the operating key will also turn CW, but will stop at about 1:00, allowing removal of the core.

Keep the lock porn coming Eric!

Re: Riyame's Collection

Both keys per lock are operating keys. I meant that each lock was sequentially pinned, and that there is only 1 pin difference between the 2 locks.

Re: Riyame's Collection

Oh, I see what ya mean now. I wasn't much help then. lol

Honestly, I really don't know alot about BEST, other than it's really fun to intentionally try to pick to one of the two shear lines (operating or control).

You already know the keyway, but for future reference... here they are.

rbrande1 sent me a Best just like yours some time ago. Both the operating and control key have the notched tips. So, I'm not sure, but it obviously doesn't prohibit removal of the core. Don't know if that helps or not. Hope you enjoy picking em' as much as I have. Note to self: buy more BEST's Mike.

Thanks for the info. The keyways are pretty cool. Some of those are just evil.

Re: Riyame's Collection

I posted this reply in the other forum, just because I happened to see the question there first... but just to spread the knowledge...

Riyame wrote:And a question. If you look closely, the bottom of the tips of the keys have been cut off. Is this to prevent the removal of the core? CW opens the lock, but CCW turns but does nothing.

No, with Best cores that cut is used to help position the key.

Most pin-tumbler locks (Yale, Schlage, Kwikset, ASSA, Weiser, etc.) use keys that are "shoulder-stopped": those keys have "bumps" near the head of the key, and those bumps (the "shoulder" of the key) press against the face of the lock once the key is fully inserted (preventing you from pushing the key in too far).

In contrast, Best locks use keys that are "tip-stopped". The keys don't have a shoulder that presses against the face of the lock; instead, when the key is fully inserted, that notch cut out of the tip of the key pushes against a lip at the back of the cylinder... and this notch in the tip stops the key when it's been inserted to the correct depth, and prevents you from pushing it in too far.

Best locks have a second shear line for their control key that's used for removing the core (if you search around, there a couple of threads with good dissasembly photos). A few other manufacturers use a different blank for their control keys (e.g., Schlage), but all the keys for a given Best core are cut on the same blank.
