Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

That American Series 10 looks like a wafer lock. How old is it?

Nice locks, Ed!

It is a wafer. I don't know how old it is, but trying to track down the patent. I assume since it says patent pending, that it would be from around the time of the patent.

Ed, the brass one you (second from last) that you think is a Slaymaker is a E T Fraim, I'm pretty sure. The 2 "M" locks I was tempted to bid on myself, but I passed. Glad you got them. Nice collection. Mark

Thanks Mark! I appreciate it. You have any idea on the age of the Series 10 Patent Pending American Padlock?

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

Sorry Ed, Most of the padlocks I collect are the older ornate locks, or newer security locks. That's the first time I ever noticed that style of American . I to would be interested in knowing it's age, let me know if you find out. Mark

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

I did some research and found this patent (US1607758) which was filed Jan 17, 1924 and issued Nov 23, 1926. It appears to me to be the same lock (actually appears to be H10). According to this site, Junkunc acquired American lock company in 1919, so this could make sense that it is issued as an American lock. So I would put the date between 1924 and 1926.

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

Are you hoping to take the green off while preserving the patina?

If so... I have no idea, lol. But I'd be very interested in
hearing what others would recommend for doing that.

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

Most people have a laugh at me when I mention this .... until that is they actually try it, and then they're converted. Plus, you don't have to buy anything.

Everyone has ketchup in the house, right? And it works wonders for polishing brass. Smear it on thick, let it dry a bit, and then with paper towel or something rub the living daylights out of it. Repeat if necessary. It'll come up like new.

Apparently, it's the vinegar and acidic tomatoes in the ketchup. Not too strong, but strong enough.

Another plus is that your beautiful shiny padlock will smell almost edible for a little while :D

And at one point I was told to add some drops of Worchester sauce to the ketchup and it would work quicker. I have to admit to not trying that since I haven't bought a bottle in forever.

Love to see the result, ed.

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

DO NOT POLISH IT!!!!

You will ruin any collector value. Right now it has a beautiful patina that most of the collectors that I talked with like. The brasso and ketchup methods will remove it.

If that is verdigris in the logo instead of green dye chem and you want to clean it then use a wooden toothpick to rub it off and clean out the crevices. The only thing I use to clean mine are toothpicks, goo gone (for tape residue etc) and brakleen to clean off the goo gone and flush dirty cores.

P.S. Nice find there Ed ;)

Re: Edsmiley's Lock Collection

A soft to medium stiffness toothbrush works well at cleaning without removing patina, too.
