Yes, but Keyes the Rabbit is a perfect example. What happened to Keyes the First? He was kidnapped - or was lost.

What happens if the lock is lost in transit? Do you negate the results of the other contestants?

And how long will the contest take? Not only do we have to give time for the package to transit from, say Texas to the UK - but then it would depend on the receiving party to open the the lock and resend it to the next contestant. Multiply that by 15 contestants. We'll be here until 2010 waiting for the results.

And it wouldn't be fair for one contestant to pay more postage for him to send the item to the UK - and then another contestant sends it to another guy in the UK 300 miles away. Not fair is it?

Too much can go wrong. I'd rather try to keep it simple - but with a fair degree of difficulty. I have a good idea in mind that I think will put everyone on as level a playing field as possible.

But first, I must consult The Oracle.

Good points!
We have a similar setup with a gripper and closing it, and that works well, but it does take a lot of time, that's true.

So, we will need a keypicking meeting then, so everyone is in the same physical location.
This will save shipping and risk of loss or theft

Otherwise I would still suggest one brand or even one model of lock to use for the contest.
So make it a Mul-T-Lock or an Assa contest for example.
We know that the tolerances used in the same brands are very similar so it would be much easier to compare them to each other

A simple method, though it would incur some costs, would be to get an idea of how many people want to compete, get them to pay for postage of their cylinder.

Once you know how many people are playing the game, and have their entry fee paid, get some cylinders all keyed alike.

Same bitting, same brand, luck of the draw on ease of opening.

Okay heres my suggestion lads and lasses.

A certain brand of lock is decided MTL ASSA etc.

1st) You must use spp technique with normal tools no little devices like mtl picks telling you where the pins are.

2nd) The desired lock will be static picked

3rd) The lock needs to be picked in the fastest time.

4th The person picking the lock must say 'last pin' at this stage the time is clocked, but for the time clocked to be valid the last pin must open the lock.

5th)) The lock needs to be then gutted and scores giving for difficulty of pins.

I don't like point 4, for the rest its very cool.
The reason I don't like point 4 is that the only way one can do this, is by knowing that lock completely, but that doesn't make him a better picker, only at that lock.
So I still believe that picking a lock for the first time would be the best way to go

For the picker to say last pin and be right he/she then proves that they no exactly where they are picking and what pins are set and not set so i still think 4th is okay imo : )

ps there was about a month notice before the last comp started so thats pleanty time to get to no you lock...

That's exactly what I don't like about it. Getting to know your lock doesn't prove anything. Only that you can pick that lock.
All of my videos of picking a lock are made while picking it for the 2nd or 3rd time.
I'm sure if I would practice on a particular lock (any particular lock that I've picked) that I can get the picking time well under 45 seconds and most probably well under the 30 seconds.
But this doesn't make me a better picker for a contest. It only proves that I've spent some time with the lock

I rather spend my time picking new locks which improves my skill more then re-picking existing locks.
So I still don't agree with it. But that's about all I can say about it. My opinion is clear now, I think
