yes, brake cleaner
macgng; it's completely unnecessary to have ~15$ in keys for a 50¢ lock ... but we all do it anyway :P

Spuds, that is a gorgeous lock! In fact, I was half tempted to trade you
for a prestine and shiny American barrel lock just like it that I have. lol

Anyway, I'm not gonna rag on ya for wanting to clean/shine it up.
We're all pleased with various things. We're all different. That's ok.

As farmall suggested, Brasso and break cleaner should do the trick.

If after using Brasso, you're not satisfied (maybe it's blotchy or not
quite as bright and shiny as you'd like), you might try some fine grit
sand paper. Find wet/dry paper in the auto section of most stores.

A lot of people use break cleaner with good results. I like ZeroTri,
Heavy Duty Degreaser - from LPS. Whatever degreaser you use,
work it in with the key then blow it out. I'd do this several times.

Thoroughly rinse after Brasso.... and thoroughly dry after degreasing...
and it's ready for a lube of your choice. Hope it turns out how you want it.
How about some before/after pics of the destructio...I mean, restoration. jk lol

Re: Lock Restoration: How do you Restore?

Is that from ebay? If so great buy, I remebered to bid too late but thats part of last minute sniping lol.

Reason people are asking if you really want to polish it, is because these barrel locks are not made any more so they are antique to an extend and no one wants to polish an antique. Polishing a 5200 is not the same as this barrel but thats enough teaching. I myself am looking for a product that will allow me to bring tarnished brass back to factory look. Brasso makes brass look over polished like mirror polishing steel. There is aproduct you simply spray on and it does all the work so Ill post the name once I find it out myself.

Never tried it myself, but I've heard that a soak in plain old white vinegar works well... of course, there is the problem of lingering acid eating away at the lock innards over time, so I would highly recommend that one follow up the vinegar soak with a soak in baking soda and water.

Re: Lock Restoration: How do you Restore?

HT vinegar is very good at removing rust as well as tarnish HOWEVER you called it well because it will eat the metal too if left for a long time. Im talking 2 3 days and make the metal pitted but thats on steel. Never tried on brass so would be interesting to see except not on this barrel.
