Old safe and vault combo locks

Few more locks from my bank.

First a big 'ol Mosler double-door safe inside a vault. This has a 4-number combo. No banana handy, so #2 screwdriver for scale.

Diebold lock on a key safe inside the same vault:

El cheapo lock on a lighter key safe:

And finally the nice Mosler lock on the vault door itself. I don't have the combo for this guy--I assume there's a way to read the combo from the wheels, correct?

Yes, remove it and send it to me!
Or, maybe the easier way is to spin the dial (and record the numbers) while someone watching the wheels tells you to stop when the gates are aligned properly...unless everything is concealed while spinning. You might ask Oldfast since he has worked over a few Moslers.
Pretty cool!

Re: Old safe and vault combo locks

If you look at the second to last picture, of the wheels, you will see that the inner ring has a pointer pointing to 40. That wheel has the gate at 40. Disassemble the lock so you can see that point on each wheel, and you have the combination. Just be sure to put the wheels back in the correct order, as some are picky about that.

Or you can just discard the locks into a flat rate box with my address on the front. I'll even be generous enough to pay for postage! ;)

Plenty of guys here who'd love to get some of those locks. You are a lucky man, MSB.

Is it really that simple? It might be possible to shine a light between the wheels and while looking down at an angle through the gate see where the next wheel's mark is without disassembly.

Best to take it apart and verify the exact positions. To change the combo you actually separate the inner and outer part of each wheel and put them back together with that notch on the number you want.

You can see on the inner track of the inner ring on the right hand side where a 3 is stamped. That is the wheel number.

Learn something new everyday. And this will come in handy when the time comes to mount the Mosler I own.

It is called a mesh or hand change combination lock if you ever want to look up more.

Hey MSB,

Those are some great locks! Like Gordon said, there are some of us who would LOVE to have access to those locks.

Thanks for posting!

Re: Old safe and vault combo locks

One more for y'all. I decided to re-combo that Mosler vault lock. Here's what it looks like apart. The inner rings separate from the outer rings and you can rotate them to point at whatever number you want.

Lock porn!!!

Sure you have heard this already, but test the combination three times with the door open before closing it. Make absolutely certain the combination works! It is one thing to screw it up on a small safe, but on a vault door?
