Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

JHW CLIMAX padlocks are one of my favorite types of Scandinavian locks. These locks are not easy to decode. In fact, I dedicated a lengthy chapter in my latest book about them. Here's my latest work. This 5 disc padlock is fantastically huge and is now the biggest and heaviest lock I own! The lock was obtained without a key and in the locked position. The key was made from tool steel. I have seen similar sized padlocks go for $175.00 and I got it for $45.00.

You can learn how to make keys for these locks in my latest book. These locks are a lot of fun and a testimony of locksmith skill.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

In the beginning of my quest for new and interesting antique padlocks, I never saw my self ever collecting Scandinavian style padlocks. Maybe the initial turnoff was, I just didn't like the idea of owning rusty old padlocks. But now, I can't get enough of these old rusty bricks of iron. Surprisingly, many Scandinavian designs will still function beautifully, despite the exterior appearance. Take the JHW CLIMAX padlocks for example, (talk about complex warding) these locks are truly a mechanical work of art. I have learned the key making and decoding process for these locks (without books or pdf's). Here's my latest work and you can learn the process in my latest book: http://www.blurb.com/b/7793878-the-extr ... r-book-two

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Collectors often have their sights on pancake, push key padlocks, but this lesser known 6-lever design (Frank Soley) made by MILLER can be quite challenging to make work again. I received my lock without a key and in the locked position. Fortunately, my lock uses a simple flat key (.040 inch thick), where other complex key way patterns exist. Don't even think about making keys for these locks without one of my decoders with custom thinner needles. Yesterday, I made a working key using spring steel. A technique for making keys for these padlocks is discussed in my latest book.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

I got thirty seconds of effort from my local locksmith to find a key blank for my simple-warded, FRAIM/SLAYMAKER padlock, just to be told "sorry, don't have it". Why did I even bother? As usual, I made my own key from tool steel. I used a six dollar scrapper blade, purchased from Harbor Freight. The groves on the key were cut with a small cut-off disc and arbor on my drill press.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

The padlock didn't come with a key. So, your guess is as good as mine.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

I was quite happy upon winning this beautiful EAGLE padlock from EBAY. The feathered finish and hidden rivets on this brass, six lever padlock are not as common. I used a single L-wire to decode the depth cuts to make a working key.

I haven't seen one of those before, with the hidden rivets. Looks neat, and nice work on the key, as always.

Re: Lauren's Antique Padlock Restoration

Wow, maybe put them up in auction format instead? Those are all selling rather quickly which means the prices are low.
